If we implemented this than there would have to be some automatic way to not be able to format any of those expensive mapping cards some use!  :o
Not sure if this is possible as I’ve heard of some who have done this with their computers…  >:(

That's a very good point Greg.
Mistakes do happen.
That would be at least a 100 dollar mistake.

And the worst part of it, is that Humminbird would get blamed. :-[

It is not the unit that protects the card rather the card program of the supplier.
I see no reason why the HB cannot format a sd.  Others do ( but I will not mention other brands of sonar) and have no problems with getting around the "protect" of the card....
Yes some people have firgured a way around the protect process but they can do that on any computer.

So, I still wish: Lets have HB format a sd....

Sonar

I do not understand why we would want to format an SD card on an HB unit?

I have only formatted a card once in 2 years.  If I want to format a card I can do it on my computer, it is not an inconvenient since I am continuously downloading recordings to my computer.    When I download recordings I can cut and copy the data to my computer or copy the data to my computer then erase the files from the card.  In two years I have not had a problem.

George it is sometimes convienient to format on the run.  If you have a computer with you that is fine, but sometimes we are just a sonar unit...
While we do carry spare cards they sometimes do not get formatted at the desk computer after use.
If one were to plan the day ahead and be prepared with spares I could see not formatting on the fly.  But sometimes we end up with used cards with data. Especially since we share the cards with other units/devices..
Especially on a days worth of scan/recording.

It sounds like you format your cards frequently, if that is so then it would be a convenience.  I have only reformatted a card once in two years of use and probably did not need to do it then.  Am I missing something, should I be formatting my cards?

It sounds like Chuck is just using the reformatting as a quick
way to erase everything on the card.

George, Yes we reformat regularily as we can be running sonar weekly and often 12 hours a day...

ITG.. yes a quick way to erase the data which "cleans the card" and get the card back in use daily...

Formatting is a way to totally clean a computer disk or in this case the SD card.  When reformatting the system erases / cleaning everything while checking all of the tracks to eliminate any bad tracks (depending on the programing).  It is preparing the SD card for new data, maximizing the storage capacity of the card by getting rid of any hidden data on the tracks and everything else on the card.

This desire is certainly not the most important one in the wish list. ;)

Maybe not the most important but important to some..
Which has no meaning unless Robert wants to put a priority on wishes...
The wish list is really a place to wish on this forum. It is not a HB site but sometimes they do look at it....
doesnt mean HB will do anything..
