My hand has been forced...Time to update...
« on: August 11, 2011, 11:36:27 PM »
Well i contacted Navionics about the issue I'm having with my unit shutting down when pushing the info button. The first thing they asked me is"do you have the latest software on your Humminbird?"And ofcorse the answer is no because I'm so paranoid of updating my unit due to a bad  experience and all the problems i see other guys having after an update.Navionics cant help me until they know i have the latest software then if the problem still happens they will work with Humminbird to  figure out the problem. So my hand has been forced i have no choice so i will cross my fingers say a small prayer and hope for the best...I watched the Utube video on updating the 998 from RGecy it seems  easy enough.Do i have to use Humminbird PC or can i just use my SD card.I also read something about not using an SD card that has been used to store waypoints or can i just format my card and it will be fine even though i used it at one time to store waypoints?I have a big striper trip planned for Saturday in a spot i never fished in before so not having my unit is not an option so i will update on sunday.Lets say the update goes bad and my unit gets messed up can i just download the software i have now and it will go back to normal? Is there anything i should look out for or any tips you guys have? Well come sunday will i feel like this  ;D...Or will i feel like this  >:(.....I will let ya know......

I would suggest using a smaller card if you have one, 2GB or less.  I even have some 16mb cards I use for updating. (some updates are now over 17mb though).  Reformat it so its completely blank.  You also need to make sure the update is not in a folder on the SD card or the unit will not be able to see it.

Just remeber to have the unit connected to a good power source if its not connected to the battery on boat.  Make sure you remove any other SD cards or navionics cards from the other slot.

just follow the steps and you should be fine!

Good Luck,

Robert

Not trying to scare you here… but I would go one step further and Export All Nav Data to an SD card and save it on your computer (through HumminbirdPC), than Erase All Nav Data after you have the file saved.  That way you will have a blank unit that has the factory default settings to be updated.  Reformat the same SD card if this is the one that you will be updating the unit with.  Than if something does go wrong and you cannot recover the unit (be loading an older version of software) than you will still have a copy of your waypoints to load on the unit when it is working again.

I'd do the update and not look back.
You will have plenty of time in the weeks to come to talk about any problems with it. :)

I'm still waiting for the 5.7 update for my 1197.
Greg, what's happening.

I don’t know what the hold up is ITG but than I don’t work in those departments.  I do know that there is someone out testing software everyday so maybe it won’t be too much longer.
