Software Update Proceedure Warning
« on: May 15, 2013, 08:07:08 PM »
I am posting this because there has been discussion on here in the past about the correct procedure when doing a software update......Specifically whether to insert the card before powering up, or wait til the unit is powered up and then insert the card.

I have seen reports on other forums that the unit....the 1197 in this case....may be corrupted if the card with the update is inserted before powering up the unit.
(This is with the latest software update, but I think it would be prudent to apply the warning to any update.)

Some time back a member (ITGEEK, I think) had a very interesting concept on this very discussion...

Allowing the unit to fully boot up before inserting the update card would be less "taxing" on the system than inserting the update card before power up....thus forcing the unit to try and update at the same time the unit is booting up...

The way I do any update on my 997 is
Remove any  or all cards.
Boot up the unit.
Return EVERYTHING to DEFAULT.
Turn off unit.
Insert update card.
Boot up unit and let it do it's thing.

Worked everytime with no problems.

you have to insert the sd card with the update on it after the unit is running.  it will no longer update if you insert it and then power it on.  it wont corrupt anything, the unit will simply not see the update

HB support says to insert the Update SD into a running 1197, but they did not seem to know this until canadabullet and myself called in after trying to update to the 6.640 release.

We had the same symptoms.  After Restore Defaults, then powered down.  When powering up with SD inserted the SD update was detected, first update screen displayed and answered, but the second update continue screen was never displayed.  My unit booted into normal mode after hitting exit key.

Later, by inserting SD update into running unit, the 1197 was updated.

Installing the SD card with the update in it before or after the unit is up and running depends on which version of software is in the unit before it is updated.  This was changed some time back so that it is now mandatory to install the SD card after the unit is up and running if it has newer software on it.  I do not remember which software version changed this.

I must have mis-read the other post.  Thought someone had reported that their unit went into La La land when inserting the card before power up......guess the software just won't let you do that now.

Sounds like the later revisions of firmware have the 'update' check after the system boots completely..   From a technical standpoint, this is the proper way to do things..
