I have a new 998 and the left side image is dark and faintly shows the same image as the right side. I use the Y cable with two SI transducers. I'm sure it's not the transducers because I swapped sides with them and got the same results. It's not the Y cable because I tried plugging the transducers directly to the unit. I don't have pics of the install, but their is no chance of signal blockage. Any ideas?

The only thing I can think of is maybe the shoreline
was at the left when you took these images.
The water depth you're in is not that deep, and maybe you
ran out of lake on the left side.

Shoreline is on the right. Water gets deeper off to the left.

I have exactly the same problem.
Humminbird sent me a new transducer, but the problem persists. The only difference is that the problem is now intermittent. I'm trying my third transducer very soon.
The problem is not related to blockage by the engine lower unit. If I tilt the engine completely out of the water and drift I get the same result. I can't rule out interference by the port trim tab, however.

It is caused by turbulence and air bubbles coming off the hull and blocking the sonar signal. I have a deep v and had same issue. I went to a dual transducer setup and problem went away.

I have no blockage because I'm using two SI transducers. I switched the transducers left to right and right to left with the same results. The part that seems bad is some of the right side image shows on the left screen, kind of a mirror image.

Sorry I didnt read your post closely! Check your depth, its shallow and I assume you are using 800khz with these images. The 800khz does not give complete 180deg coverage, and in shallow water, if your range is high you will not always be able to see out to that complete range. There is a post here on the forum that goes in to detail about the 800khz vs 455 khz. Any tilting of the transducer or boat can also affect this as well.
455khz will give you better results in shallow water at longer ranges.
even if you are using 455 and if the bottom is rising on that side it will also cut down the range and give you a dark appearance behind the ridge or area.
As for the echos, this happens in narrow waterways or areas where you can get a sonar signal that will bounce off the shoreline. It is clearly evident you are running next to an embankment.

It is deeper on the left side and I was using the 455khz.

I couldn't find in your post about you running the newest
version of the software. You might want to upgrade to test it.
Remember to reset to factory defaults before and after any
software upgrade. Also, do some research on the upgrade version,
because some recent upgrades have had some major problems.
You don't want to cause more problems than you already have.
You might also want to put a call into the Humminbird Customer
Resource folks at 1-800-633-1468.
They might have some suggestions for you, or maybe
can send you new transducers to test.

You have used two different HDSi transducers plugged directly into the unit and yet get the same results right?
Than it sounds like the problem is in your 998c Si unit.
Prove this by testing your unit on someone else’s boat that is running a Humminbird Si unit (any model will work for this) and/or their unit on your boat and transducers.

Humminbird units are not very common up here in my area, so I'm unable to test it on another boat easily. It's now on it's way to Alabama to get checked at the factory. Anyone else had a defective unit right out of the box, or am I just very unlucky?
