Extensive testings with the long Lowrance LSS-2, the standard HB SI 160 and my Doubleducer (based on two SI 160 transducers) show very clearly the LSS-2 is superior when used with a HB 981 unit in a demanding situation. The images below show the same target, a 8 m wreck at 28 m (nearly 90 feet) on silt bottom as it appears in Humviewer with the same settings in the unit and without change of settings in Humviewer. I know some people will claim the 981 and the SI 160 tranducers are outdated technology, but truth is technology and performance in the later units and transducers are very similar.

The order between conditions, from the top, is:
 
LSS-2 at 455 kHz
Standard SI 262 kHz
Doubleducer at 455 kHz
Doubleducer at 262 kHz
Standrad SI at 455 kHz
 
The wreck is not visible at all with a HB standard transducer or a Doubleducer at 455 kHz, while the LSS-2 (455 kHz) shows the wreck clearly.

Hi Rickard,

Can you check if you by mistake made and/or uploaded the wrong snapshot from the "Standard SI at 455" recording? ...It seems to be from a more westerly location than the LSS-2 recording: The distance between the two coordinates is about 95 meters, and the heading is quite different too:

Snapshot for "Standard SI at 455":
Latitude:   59 deg. 45.130 N
Longitude: 17 deg. 36.711 E
Heading:    115.4 degrees

Snapshot for "LSS-2 at 455":
Latitude:   59 deg. 45.123 N
Longitude: 17 deg. 36.811 E
Heading:    159.6 degrees

Roddy, I will hang one on a towfish as soon as my second LSS-2 arrives.
 
Tore, thanks, I took the snapshot at the wrong location. I have replaced that snapshot with one that is as close the LSS-2 snapshot location as possible. Still no wreck to be seen. It was this kind of results that made me build my first towfish. I simply had to get down closer the bottom to see anything. The Doubleducer att 262 kHz and the LSS-2 have changed the need for a towfish in my waters. Now I can do "bulk scanning" of wide areas in no time just with a hull-mounted ducer.
 
As you know, contrast and brightness can be adjusted within a very wide range in Humwiever so the quite dark LSS-2 image show very clear details after adjustments. Since the horizontal resolution is better in the LSS-2 than in the Doubleducer at 262 kHz I prefer the LSS-2 in almost all situations.

A significant difference, remains to hope that someday HB also brings a longer transducer on the market. :-\

This is very interesting...

Is it possible to connect LSS-2 directly to HB 997C. Or do you need to cut the wires and splice them to HB connector ?

There is (as far as I know) no adapter on the market, so you have to cut and splice yourself. Also, an transducer is needed for the downward, depth sensing channel. You can find quite alot of info on how this is done in some of the other threads in this section of the forum.
