This is my first towfish project. Anyone can build one like this in a few hours. Its all made in aluminum.
A led weight 2,5 kg, is in the front. I have only tested it whit standard cabellenght. It seem to work well.

I  made it whit a V-tail, because its easier to build, and it will not get stuck in the seabottom as easy as a fourblade tail. At least I hope so?

I gave it the name "Vesihiisi" (Seatrull), after the famous Finnish ww2 submarine. A seatrull was also a fictive creature we use to scare the kids whit, so they would stay away from shoreline and not get drowned.

Made this out of PVC.  Plex fins.   I cut the body for the fins to be disassembled.  I balance the fish with lead on each end.  If anyone wants more info I will have to look at old notes.

Some figures:
Lenght  1.50m
Tail fin in X configuration , made out of 2mm stainless steel plate  14 x 45 cm

Pipe 32mm diam. wallthickness 1mm,  transducer simply connected with bolt & nut.
2 divebelt weights of 2kg at the front.
towing point: shackle which is connected tothe pipe by stainless steel hose clips, same used for connecting weights and for securing of  fins.

total weight 8.5 kg , easy to handle with 4mm polyester wire and without gloves.

Objective: a tow fish capable  to be used with relative high boatspeeds to make "quick" scans of large area's. For this I need a fish with some weight / less drag or a depressor wing.
A "big" wreck will be noticed, afterwards these positions will be run with reduced speed and range  to get detailed images.

Before modification she was equiped with plastic fins (to weak > deformation and un-balance and much less weight > towing point more to the forward as on previous picture)
Now the towing point is almost in centre (1 a 2 cm before centre of weight), the fins will take care for a stable course.

Regards,

Frank

This is my experimental fish in it's present condition. Not beatiful, but works well. The body is a 3,5 feet, 1" steel pipe. Weight is now 10 kg which is needed for keeping the fish at 30 m depth at 3 Knots. I have attached lead at the nose, inside the nose and behind the transducer. The towing cable is from PVC coated steel wire. The cable is attached at the balance point with a turnbuckle to prevent from roll. Fifty meter with ethernet cable is spliced on the transducer cable.

The first attempt to build a fish for the transducer. Weight in air: 5,2 kg. I use http://www.fischerconnectors.de/. The cable is from an ocean reef diver telephone and can be used without an extra cable.
