Humminbird XP 9 20 Thru Hull Transducer Not Working

(1/1)

Rich P:
I am trying to get a thru hull transducer working on my 2008 198VX. There was an existing one, in the bilge area that came loose, so I reattached w/ epoxy and am only getting a reading of 1.8'. I purchased a new XP 9 20, tested it directly out of the back of my 1198c, and it worked fine when placing in water over the boat. But, when I held it against the hull in the bilge area- 1.8' again.

I have had two hull repairs done by a professional fiberglass company, and am wondering if this could be the reason for the erroneous reading, or if it is something else? The original thru hull puck worked fine, until it came loose a couple of years ago. After hitting a couple of underwater objects, while on plane, I really need to get a transducer working at high speeds. FWIW, the side imaging, and 2D sonar, works fine out of the SI transducer mounted to the hull.

I appreciate any advice!

Thank you in advance,
Rich

Simply holding the xducer against the inside of the hull will not give adequate results because this leaves air between the xducer housing and the hull (Sonar will not read thru air)  ...

Test the shoot thru xducer by adding a couple inches of water into the bilge and test on the water for results  ...

Was the Fiberglas repair job down/under  where you want to mount your transducer?  If it was, I suggest you find another spot on your boat for your transducer location that the Fiberglas wasn't repaired.

Thank you in advance,
Rich
