998 screen goes dark on boot up

Hi guys,
Looked through other notes but thought I would ask anyway.
I have a 998 that occasionally goes dark on boot up when the unit would normally start displaying the sonar screen. I have plenty of power as I was on a fly-in trip using a running 20HP motor connected to it's starting battery. On the dark screen I could hit the power button to get the shutdown screen. I could see it but was very very dark. Light setting was at the max.
I would reboot. Sometimes it would work. Other times I would have to do it several times to get it working.
Another person on our trip had the same model. He had the same issue with his once in a while.
Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

Is the unit functional enough to get to the Restore Defaults under the Setup tab ...??

Yes, the unit works fine. It's just dark on boot up once in awhile.

It sounds like the back light is failing ...
Try Restore Defaults anyway when you can ...

Just found the unit quits pinging once the screen goes dark.
