Side Imaging Data and DrDepth

(1/1)

I'm sure that this has been answered many times before, but I am a complete Newbie and could not find the answer when I searched.  Please be patient.

Can you use the side-imaging data to make contour maps with DrDepth?  It would seem that collecting data from 100ft on either side of the boat would be much faster than just collecting within the narrow cone of the down looking sonar.

Is this something that is possible?

Thanks for your patience and knowledge.

You cannot determine the depth at a given point with SI.  Depth is measured vertically.  The distances with SI are on a slant (aka Slant Range).  You may be able to see that a terrain is sloping down or up, but you have no way to determine an actual depth.

Here is a good link to read.  Side Imaging Understanding Distances and more......

For our mapping we use the 2d data which as robert said is under the boat.  I will have to look and see what data SI sends out on export.   I think it is the verticle under the boat as Robert said.  chuck

That makes sense.  I am still working through all the awesome threads on this site and trying to wrap my mind around how the data is acquired, stored, and exported.

Any other suggestions for what threads I should read, please let me know.

Thanks,

TB

You can search for words on this forum and find a lot of matches.  This forum is chock full of interesting and pertinent topic information.  It takes a while to puruse thru the topics but that is a good rainy day project.  Getting familiar with the areas (topics) is the challenge.  It is like learning the humminbird product but the difference is the answers to almost anything are here.  And organized into topic headers.  Makes some stuff easier to find.  Dont get too caught up in the details and always ask for the big picture.  Lots of the guys here can answer ans also  include  link(s) to relative postings.    Chuck
