Newbie help interupt image. Is there something wrong?
« on: February 28, 2015, 09:55:16 PM »
Hello I am John go by the username Shelfish, been reading and learning but this I do not understand. I just bought a 598 ci hd si unit and have been out four times, each time I learn something. Don't know if I am spending too much time playing with the unit or not fishing hard enough. Here are three images that I am at a loss as to why I do not see the fish in Side imaging. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Individual fish echoes will show much smaller in a SI image than the same fish echoes in 2d or DI ...even at modest SI Range settings of 60 - 70ft ...

The larger the SI setting ...the more bottom acreage data the unit is "squeezing" into that small display ... Which just makes fish echoes small ... Really small ...

These small white echoes are 40-60lb Asian carp ... Reaching 2-3ft long ... Imagine how small of a white dot a 10" fish would be showing ...

Try lowering your SI Range even smaller to 30-40ft until your eyes are trained to pick out the small white dot fish echoes ...

Thanks for your reply, but shouldn't I see the shadow as it should be bigger than the fish. As I understand the way the beam is sent out it should also form a cone behind it that continues to get large as it gets farther from the boat and what it would have reflected off of.

A possible reason you don't see the shadow is because the fish could be directly under the boat. 2D would show them and SI probably wouldn't.

I notice the length of your recording is 2hr. 4min. 22sec. Many users try to keep the recordings smaller ( 20-30min.) so HumViewer will be able to process it easier. Example-- start a recording, stop after 20mins., immediately start the next recording, stop after 20mins. etc.

Yea, I was trying that and forgot at that particular time. You just get caught up in what you are doing and seeing on the toy. I hope to make this a tool not a toy so any advice would go a long way.

You won't be the first nor the last to make a recording of that length. Voice of experience here.

image 3 you can easily see the fish in Right Side SI screen...

Top side of right SI screen, 2nd range line in, just to the right of it...

good shot... can clearly make out the ditch/creek channel too

Thanks Caskey_b. Here is another view that I circled in red what I think is fish. Am I right or am I wrong. I saw stuff like this all day Sunday while I was fishing for pre-spawning crappie. I did not catch any crappie but I came home with two large mouth bass two strippers and one white perch. All fun to catch on light line.

I thought I was sure so I fished and fished... I was fishing for crappie but I guess these are something else? but I also through a variety of jigs and  spoons but nothing. Maybe catfish? I wish I would have caught one to see what it was... but! maybe next time?

My personalized HB bootup screens says ...

   Just because
You can see them
  Doesn't mean
You can catch them

A suggestion. In the recording that you used to display the image with the red circle, play it again until you reach that image, stop, right click on the
SI image and change the color from Blue to SI Brown. See if this helps. I find that color palette easier to read.

Another thing that may prove interesting. On the 2D part of your image, your in 33' on a 0' to 180' range. Get to that point in the recording again and
right click over the 2D part of the image. The menu will have "Crop to" and "Crop from" listed. Cursor down to "Crop from" and click on it. It should show a
range of numbers to pick from. Choose one near the middle range between the 0' surface and the 33' bottom. The image should reload. Now do the same
with "Crop to". This time pick a number about 20' to 25' below the 33' bottom. The image should reload again. If all goes according to plan ( I'm doing this
all from memory, which in my case is a risky thing), you should now have a magnified view of the bottom. I'm interested to see what that green thing on the
peak between the two ditches you crossed turns out to be.

I'm voting a couple fish at the right side of the image and one in the first depression right of center.
It's surprising what changing the color on the image does to enable you to pick out different things. I like SI Brown and what the equivalent of original palette is. Can't remember the correct name.
Rickie has a good point in that they don't feed 24/7.

I have found that my eyes adjust to the BROWN color pallet better as well... to each their own, but brown does it for me!!   ;)

Brown does work well, but in the sunlight, is tough viewing for me unless I have the top up.
Amber1 is a good compromise, I have issues with Blue also. Amber 2 is too hot for most things...
At night all of them work well when tweaked up!
