597ci hd di transducer fail?
« on: November 30, 2013, 02:19:29 PM »
Hello.

I have ff as in title. it was grand last time i used it (6mths ago?) and since i changed transducer bracket (this could cause a damage to cable - gland and transducer wasn't sufficient for stiffness of the cable - i could see little crack from day 1 - i made small loop and ziptied it to bracket - it was grand for nearly 2 years yesterday was the first day i actually touched it since i bought it) At the moment it shows temp ok, but no bottom nor proper depth (readings jumps 100-1200 feet at random). could this be a cable at transducer? can it be mended? any ideas welcome.

edit:
I carefully removed isolation from last few inches of cable at transducer end then I took my dremel and played dentist ;)
i dug quite deep into transducer and what i found: 2 cables snapped - bare wire (ground? my guess - it looks slightly corroded snapped flush with transducer surface) and orange (no idea unless suppose  to be soldered to metal inside - pulled it without any problem from transducer - no sign of solder/damage end stripped  did not find other end in proximity.
Question remains how can i check is my head unit ok? I finally got all (but orange) cables connected (just for fun rather than mend) but unit doesn't see a thing. Screen remains white - can't feel vibrations (use to hear it) i can understand than orange was lets say signal from xxxkhz head but i go no display on any of the screens.
How can i make sure that buying new transducer will sort me out? don't know single person with similar unit.

Without another known good DI model unit or transducer, you can’t know for sure if the transducer is where all of the problem was or not.

Ordered new transducer. It doesnt work... white screen with blue dots from time to time. No bottom contours and random depth readings in 300 to 1000ft range. Nothing on si either. Tried to restore defaults and turn sonar off and on few times. Unit never dropped always caried in thick pouch anything i can do before geting rid of it?

No, not really unless you want to send it to a repair center.  When the transducer died it may have taken out the transmitter or the receiver.

Ireland. (got it as a gift from friend who lived in usa some time ago)... my guess is it is something to do with signal generator (quartz or its circuit on board - look 10 mhz under oscilloscope very unstable/fuzzy couldn't find a single info on it) or that fm whatever chip on board (receiver i guess). but with smd i'm not even trying to touch it. Also big capacitor on board looks loose. i'm considering buying 598 ci hd si combo hope that seller will take back in trade in transducer for 597 i just bought. but i would appreciate any help
