Custom Charts and Lake mapping FREEWARE

Hi!

My name is John. I've written some software to do mapping of recorded HT tracks and generating depth maps using Humminbird echos. Some of you would know my software published in "Unofficial HB Forum" since last year. So I think it's time to say hello in this forum, and introduce my free software:

### HBTrackMapper ###

Using HBTrackMapper, you are able to map a lake from few recorded traces. The recording is done using your Humminbird and also it is possible to display the mapped chart on your Humminbird! All you need is some recorded tracks from your lake and this software.

Importing GPX KML and HT Files

- Load any number of GPX tracks or HT tracks recorded by your Humminbird.
- Add shoreline and island figures, drawn in Google Earth and exported to KML or GPX.
- You are able to set custom colors, which will result in nice images.

- Using the editing tools you could delete wrong recording points and merge multiple files to a big project. Save and load this project as an GPX file.

Prepare Mapping

- Interpolate with a very good algorithm values between the tracks and create a depth map. You will love it's extrapolation width which could be set to your needs. It is possible to get a nice map with just a few tracks with distances of more than 50m between.

- Setup custom discover width!

- Mapping is using all CPUs of your machine, so you'll get finished faster.

After mapping

- This is the mapped image!

ISO lines

- Now it's time to create an ISO style map. Setup the depth difference of each line and start it:
- After calculation you could export this file as an GPX to view on your Garmin GPS...

Exporting maps for Humminbird units

- Create an HT file of the ISO map to view it on your Humminbird while fishing!

Save as an HT-File to SD Card and upload to your Humminbird. It is also possible to upload via serial connection (please contact me for further instructions!).

- Have better fishing results with custom charts!

- Zoomed:

Using the free software "Blender" it is possible to render such nice images from a mapped lake...

Just set mapping color to black/white and map an image, save it as a heightmap and follow the instructions given in this guide:

Hey John,
Thanks for putting this together.
I've been playing around with some of the earlier versions since I got a Side imaging unit this spring.  However, I haven't really been able to get a good map out of it yet.  Once I add all my files (incomplete shorelines due to a big lake, as well as my tracks from the humminbird) I then try to interpolate.  When I do this, I get a black screen with the shorelines.  I played around a bit more, and the program thinks that the land side of the shoreline is actually the water, so it isn't creating the contours in the lake.  Is there a way to dictate what side of a kml line is the water side, and which side is the land side?

Thanks,
Adam

Hi Adam!

Islands are detected by the program when they comply following conditions:

- closed island shape
- all islands are _inside_ the main shoreline

The second condition will create some problem, when you try to map a very very big lake, where you don't provide a closed shoreline... In such a case you should try to close the shoreline in any way (rectangular) to give the program an mapping canvas. Try the newer versions, there are a lot of improvements since prior releases.

Best regards!
John

Alright thanks for the suggestions John.

I will modify my shorelines accordingly and see how things go in the new version.

4d-rock:
Well I was able to make an alright map from some of my recordings, though I will need to do some gap filling as there is a lack of data in some areas.

A quick question though.  Is there a way to either change the colour of the scale, or possibly shade between the lines based on depth (similar to what you see on navionics or lakemaster maps).

It would just be easier to visualize depths than the green shades that it defaults to.

Thanks
