Screen disturbance on 1198
« on: June 25, 2013, 02:12:41 PM »
I was fishing on Saturday when all of a sudden the screen on my 1198 got a "snowy" look to it. The best way I can describe it is how a television screen might look with rabbit ear antenna and a poor signal. You can see the picture but through a lot of snow. All the functions on the unit still work, but every screen has that same interference. Even when I power the unit off, and it goes to the black screen to shut down, the snowy look is still there. I can't find any loose connections. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

So.....you are saying that you still have this snowy look even when the unit is shut off.......or just while it is shutting off?

If you still have the snowy look when it is shut off, it sound like you may have accidentally got something on the screen.  Insect repellent is the common cause there, and can permanently damage the screen.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

While the unit is shutting down. There clearly is a problem of some sort. Problem does not involve bug spray or any other foreign substance on the screen face.

It looks like some type of interference. Purchased the unit new in December. Initially I had a bad gps puck which Humminbird replaced. I've been fishing with the unit since then with no problems. That was late March or early April. This past Saturday I was idling around a point looking at the SI and all of a sudden something wasn't right. Nothing new or different on the boat to cause interference. Tried turning everything else off just to be sure. Like I said, it's on every screen view, not just SI or DI etc.

Sam K,
Is this continuing to happen even with the motor/trolling motor off while the boat is drifting?

There is not another sonar unit running on the boat at the same time is there?

Greg,

That is correct. Although, it now seems like an electrical problem either in my boat or perhaps in the power cord for the unit. Possibly in the unit but I need some free time to investigate. Turned the unit on yesterday before work to get a picture of the disturbance on the screen, but it wasn't near as bad as before. Started jiggling wires under the console and shaking the unit a little and got the snowy look to come and go but it wouldn't stay for a picture. I did all the typical wire shaking and connection checking on the water when the problem first occurred and couldn't get it to go away or even change. Now I can't get it to stay. Seems electrical to me. I'll post when I figure something out.

Don't know what's wrong yet, but here is a picture. Every screen has the same interference.

Ok. Disconnected every wire, cord and plug that has anything to do with the unit, gave em a visual inspection, and made new connections where applicable. Seems like it might have worked. See what happens on the water tomorrow.

Scratch that. It's back. Have to wait for my buddy and
 put it on his boat.

The problem is in the unit. Think I got the box that fell off the truck. First the gps puck is bad and now the unit's screwed up.

Just got my replacement unit from Humminbird. Have to send it right back (getting a little pissed) because something is rattling around inside. I'd tear it apart but I'm afraid it would void the warranty. Anyway, I have a question about the warranty. Since this replacement unit has a different serial number than my original unit, do I need to register this unit? Or does my existing warranty info automatically transfer to the new unit?

If the replacement unit is defective, I would just return it along with an explanation
of the problem and work off of the warranty of the original unit.

That's what I'm going to do now. I was thinking more towards future repairs or warranty service. The Humminbird support girl didn't know.

I believe that the warranty runs from the original unit purchase date unless the 90-day Service warranty would push it beyond this date.
Example: Unit purchased August 12th, 2012 and returned for service on July 22, 2013.  The unit would be covered by the 90-day Service warranty as it extends beyond the 1 year warranty.
