How to Record on the 597ci HD DI Combo?
« on: February 17, 2013, 04:50:29 PM »
OK, I am at a loss.

I am trying to work out how to record on my brand new 597ci HD DI Combo unit. I have put in an 8GB SDHC card and started up the unit (no transducer, so in sim mode) and then what do I do to start recording?

When I look at the brochure I got on the unit, it says it can't record - but I see a bunch of posts here discussing this very feature for this unit.

RTFMing does not give me any info on such a feature.

Any help for this confused newbie would help.

Thank you in advance,

Cafe

plug in the transducer and run in normal mode to see if the record function shows up after making sure the recording view is enabled ..if it does have it.

Wonderful! My 8GB card is estimated to give me around 4000 hours of recording time - cool!

Any idea on taking snapshots as opposed to recordings?

Thank you for your help gentlemen.

I am really impressed by the capabilities of the modern sounder units.

Be advised that you DO NOT want to take a snapshot while recording.
Don't do both at the same time.
Stop the recording, take a snapshot, then start recording again.

Well I did manage to get it recording in the simulation mode, but only the regular 2D sonar, no DI. BTW, the 4000 hours is more like about 22 hours...once the numbers settled down a bit!

Had to use HumViewer to run the plot.

Now I have tried making snapshots by hitting the "MARK" button, but when I move the SD card across to my computer...nothing there.

***Possible Stupid Question Alert***

Is there any problem attaching the transducer as suggested above while the transducer is not actually immersed and/or pointing at human bodies?

No problems with running the transducer out of the water.

Make sure that you went to the Accessories menu tab in the main menu system and set the Screen Snapshot menu to the “On” setting.

Thanks guys, I am now happily capturing some nice crisp 640x640 files as well as recording merrily away.

In the absence of a non-frozen body of water nearby, I turned the transducer on my abdomen and switched to DI mode. Imagine my surprise when the following swam into view:

Yup, me and this little beauty are gonna have us some fun!

LOL @ Cafe!

LocDown you would not believe what all we have had questions and comments of for alternate usage of our sonar units.  The best one yet I think was the when someone asked about ultra-sounding their dog to see how many puppies she was carrying!  :o

That is some wild stuff.

Cafe,
It's best to record many small files rather than one
huge file.

Playing back a huge file takes a lot of resources on
the unit and on a computer.

Thanks for the tip ITGEEK! I can imagine that a large file would take a lot of time to load into a viewer and would also be more difficult to get to the interesting bits.

Unless something has changed with the newer software versions, you cannot take a snapshot while recording.  You can mark a waypoint, but it does (did) not take a snapshot.

I think the main reason of course is that the unit is recording data and would come to a stop if it tried to record the snapshot as well.  Definitely a need for a buffer!
