What transducer to use?
« on: November 10, 2012, 03:30:30 PM »
I have a 998si with the correct transducer mounted on the transom of a G3 aluminum boat.
I want to move the unit to a new Stratos fiberglass boat.
What transducer do I need and any installation hardware required?
The delivering dealer will install it, but I want to supply the needed hardware.
Thanks, Ron

Sorry. With a little more digging, I think I found the answer.
A through hull appears to make a hump in the flow of water under the hull. Doesn't look ideal.
I see where my current transducer can be screw mounted to the transom, just like on the tin boat.
If this is not correct, a reply would be welcomed.
Thanks, Ron

You are right the transducer that you received with the 998 is the correct one for your new boat.  The dealer should know how to install it correctly.  One thing to remember is that only 2D will work at speeds in excess of 5 mph.

Also if your new boat does not have a threw the hull transducer, you may want to purchase one and have him install it.  You can get a transducer switch to go between the SI and the threw the hull transducer.  The threw the hull transducer is epoxied in place and works better in high speed then the SI transducer.

Well, the through-hole is acutally through the hull and not the same as the shoot thru transducer you're talking about. You could get the Side Imaging splitter cable (AS SIDB Y) along with the XP 9 20 shoot thru transducer for 2D-high speed sonar. The splitter cable will use the 2D transducer and the side imaging transducer will be only side imaging versus the side imaging transducer doing everything. I hope that didn't confuse anyone.

Locdown, does the signal from the SI and shoot-thru combine in the 998 for presentations, or must a manual switch selection one or the other?

It will combine at the unit, no switch is needed.

LocDown, the HB product sheet does not list XP 9 20 as compatible with 998. Does the splitter cable combining signals make that a non issue? Also, the XP 9 20 should be the non temp model?
Thanks, Ron

It does not list that transducer for any SI unit because it doesn't have Si capabilities. You're only going to use it for the 2d sonar properties.

To answer your question fishbone: yes, the AS-Si-DB-Y cable makes that a non-issue.  The 998c Si unit will only ‘see’ both transducers as being one complete 2D/Si/Di transducer.

Also yes in that you should get the non-temp model XP-9-20 transducer.

Here is a picture to help you understand how the AS-Si-DB-Y cable connects to both transducers:

Yeah. I didn't have that picture to "illustrate" what I was trying to accomplish. Thanks Greg :)
