River Life, That may be a AL-E-GAT-OR. :'(

Air bubble trail from nose aft and up, then left and right.

Go back the next time your out that way and see if it is still there !

Roddy, you where not supposed to scare river life to hell :D

Seriousy, according to the size (measured on the 65ft range thats set), i would guess its a another fairly big part of a tree or something. If you run it another time from another direction you'll be sure.

About the quality: I think it's set a bit sharp, which might be easier to watch in bright sunlight, but you'll get more details with less sharpness and a bit less sensivity.

The qualitiy of the sonar returns itself looks almost perfect to me and you've got some nice shots of sunken trees there, good work !

On your second picture, lower right, that could
be a school of suspended baitfish (Crappie/Shad).
Not sure.

I like to fish for Bass, crappie, but my favorite fish is big blue cats. I watched a video from a guide in Texas on how to understand sonar. It was a great video on showing what he thought was big bluecats on 2d sonar and i think it makes sense to me. Seeing that red shows up as a hard surface the top of the arch is red meaning that is his hard head. What do y'all think. Does anybody know  how to set the 798 unit up to target catfish. Thanks for all the help.

It appears to be normal bottom stuff. To be sure I would need a copy of the recording..
but I would not be too excited about what is there.

OK,  We have a lot of BIG GATORS in the waters of South Carolina and they can look just like that in the blow up!

river:
You can't set the unit up to specifically identify a certain species.

What you can do is go catfishing and see what's on your screen.
If you catch catfish, then you can equate what's on the screen with
the species being shown as catfish.

The more you go catfishing and pay attention to the screen, eventually
you will be able to know from experience what you are seeing.
The locations and depths of the fish and structure, and the location of the forage will
be pretty important.

No book or website is going to teach you this.  You have to get out there and
pay your dues on the water.  Also keep detailed records of your fishing trips.
The more you go, the more you'll learn.
They're aint no shortcuts.

River, ITG has hit the nail on the head.  follow his suggestions...
One additional learning tool is to record the scans and then view them on an external viewer like Humviewer. The recorded data is the raw unfiltered data and thru settings in HV you can get a great replay of your scans.  Good way to learn to read the views....
Forward and reverse are a whole lot faster on the viewer than on the replay on the unit..
