SI Images from December 2010
« on: February 08, 2011, 11:05:51 AM »
I downloaded all my SI snapshots this weekend. I found one hole in December that was stacked up with big fish. I believe they are catfish but I am not sure. What type of fish do you think they are?

These were up on top of the flat and the shape of the fish look different. Maybe they are just smaller in size or maybe a different species?

doubleG....great pictures.  Yes I think you have a catfish hole.  You could go to your menu screen and turn on sounds....that way you should hear them meowing.

Well not really.  but if you have a friend with underwater communications you can put that in the water and hear catfish whistleing.  kind of interesting but we hear that a lot on the divers radios.

Thanks Chuck... I got my sensitivity a little high and my right side is blocked a little by another transducer but the pics turned out great. I hope to go try them sometime. Maybe they will still be there...

I never knew catfish made any underwater noise.. You serious about the whistleing?

Yes....... catfish make a whistleing sound. It was weird the first time I heard it.   The same with shrimp making a clicking noise....

Okay, I think Chuck was underwater a bit long… I mean catfish whistling?  They don’t have the lips for it!  Now a Carp, Drum or Buffalo fish on the hand…  >:D  ;D  :D

Thanks for being understanding.
Again  Great pictures..
It certainly looks as if you hit a catfish hole. At least next time maybe you will have a rod and some worms to see what hits...
The shadow of several of the fish do look quite like catfish...
If you do have any diving friends with a communication unit.  have them put it in the water.

There are a few things that are really freaky when you are diving in zero visibility!  Nothing more so than the errie burping sounds of a black sea bass.  I was diving in 35' in zero vis and keep hearing this sound all around me.  I had no clue what it was at the time or if it was going to eat me!

I have also been slapped in the face (knocked my face mask off) by a 5-6' Tarpon.  That litteraly scared the crap out of me.  I never saw it coming.

I find that in the winter months the gar gang up quite a bit.  Did you see any gar surfacing??  Those long lines/dashes indicate a long fish.  I don't get catfish in that big of schools.

I have never done any diving.. I bet that was pretty scary with the tarpon. If you want to try something spooky you need to go hand grabbing with me... haha..

T Mike - I didn't see any gar that day... but it could be. I didn't think catfish would stack up that tight either but I don't know. I know they were big fish. I did find another large group of fish one day on SI. I went back to it and cast for bass a while and noticed lots of gar rolling on the surface in just the one area. So I wrote all those fish off as gar. Here are the snapshots from that area:
