HB SI Newbie ?
« on: September 28, 2010, 08:03:19 PM »
Hey all. Tried searching the forum and FAQ but couldn't resolve my question. What is the benefit of an external antenna? BTW I'm considering a 798c or ci.

Thanks

out-cast,

Welcome to the forum.  One of the benefits would be that you could get the GPS reciever closer to the transducer for more accurate waypoint marking.  I have mine directly over the transducer and can get very accurate waypoints when marking with SI out to the side or on past data.

Hope that helps,

Robert

out-cast,
another benefit is if the antenna goes bad, you still  have your unit to use.
you don't have to send the complete unit back to HB for repair.
      just order a replacement antenna.

I have had both.  A 797c2 with external and now a 798ci which is internal.   I use my unit in multiple boats, including a portable set-up.  Always needing the external receiver was a pain.   The units with internal (at least the 700 series) will automaticly switch to external if the receiver is present.   So, when I upgraded, selected the internal receiver.  On my main fishing boat, I have the now discontinued High Accuracy external receiver, and that is mounted near the SI transducer.  You can get the 798ci, and when needed add an external, if you need additional accuracy or problem with internal receiver sat reception.
If it bends my rod, I'm a happy fisherman.

I didn't try to misled you. I didn't know an external antenna could hook up to the internal unit.

On older designed units, it was common for the external receiver to perform better than the internal.  The difference between the two are much less now.  The external was also required for some boats that have a hard canopy overhead which blocked allot of the sat reception.
