Title: Here fishy fishy!!!
Post by: Juicegoose on July 26, 2017, 02:55:14 PM
I recently upgraded my unit to a new Helix 10 Mega. My sole purpose for upgrading was to be able to better see what was beneath and beside me in very shallow water(6' or less). The mega did not disappoint. On her maiden voyage in about 4.5' of water while drifting along a flat you can see easily that a school of fish sat with fear as i drifted by lure in hand. I let them live though conservationist that I am.

Something I had wondered when i captured the image was what the other streaks were? more smaller fish just higher in the water column?

Cool shot.  Do you know what those fish were and how large they were?  What was your chart speed set to?

Most of the echoes that show no "gap" between the target and the shadow are "stuff" on the bottom - rocks, shells, trash  ...

Echoes that show no shadow at all are usually higher in the water column  ...causing its shadow to cast upon the bottom farther outside the SI Range selected  ...

This diagram shows how targets and their shadow help discern where that target is in relation to the SI view  ...

The echoes are elongated because your Chart speed (2) is higher than your boat speed (0.4mph) causing the SI to repeatedly ping the same target over and over  ...

Higher Chart speed is not a bad thing  ... Sometimes the elongated echoes make it easier to discern what one is seeing  ...
