Title: 598 ciHD si - up-grades?
Post by: Yrral3215 on January 12, 2015, 11:38:09 PM
I have a 598 ci HD si that I bought in Mar of 2013. It works fine, but Im wondering if there is an up-graded transducers available or if there are any addons like the 360 units that will work with my unit.

It has the XNT 9 SI 180T transducer on it now.

Thanks,

Larry Dunn

You can "upgrade" to the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T to give somewhat more detailed SI images ...this is simply because the SI piezoes (in the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T) are longer which creates a thinner slice beam which renders better detail ...

The XHS 9 HDSI 180 T is capable of 455kHz SI and 800kHz SI ...but your 598ci HD SI can only utilize the 455kHz capability of the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T... (598ci HD SI has no 800kHz capability) ...

----------
360 is an Ethernet accessory ... And the 598ci HD SI has no Ethernet capability ...

I'm not sure that I would be able to tell if I had slightly more detail in the SI image with my small screen, but I will check out that option.

Thanks!!

I went ahead and ordered a XHS 9 HDSI 180 T and installed it last week. Took the boat out yesterday and the side imaging detail is noticeably better.

I also updated the software to the latest version. It could be my imagination, but the regular sonar views may even be somewhat sharper than before.

I wasnt sure it would be worth doing with the small screen on the 598, but I am pleased with the change.

I'll try to remember next time we go out. I keep forgetting to switch out the SD card so I can record stuff!

I would love to see some pics of this.
I have the same unit and will probably upgrade my ducer if they are good. ;D

We have been out a couple of times recently in local lakes, but I keep forgetting to swap out the map card and do some recording. Sorry guys! I did take some time to play with some of the settings last time I was out.

Im still pretty impressed with the new ducer images. Of course, its hard to say if thats the excitement of new hardware talking or if the images are really better. Have to actually compare some screen shots to be sure.

We aren't going out again until 18 Mar for a week long bass/walleye trip. I will do my best to get some screen shots recorded, but it will be towards the end of the month before I can get them posted.

Here are a few screen shots I found from the old/original ducer. These were taken around the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and in Gig Harbor - all salt water.

The first one is in the harbor and shows down and side views of an under water sewer pipe and some dock pilings on the right side of the image. The other side view image is of the old Tacoma Narrows bridge - Galloping Gerty - on the bottom on the right side.

Unfortunately, I cant find any saved images from fresh water lakes. Lost them when my old computer died.

I finally remembered to put the data chip in and get some recordings with the new transducer! I'm am very pleased with the up-grade. I cant recall ever seeing fish show up in the down or side views before the up-grade. The level of detail is significantly better over all. These shots were taken in fresh water on Banks
Lake in Washington state right at the point where Lake Roosevelt water is pumped into Banks. There was a significant current and lots of turbulence, as well as some windy conditions, so the boat wasn't tracking perfectly straight all the time.

In some of the shots you can see some of our fishing gear showing up as well as a large under water chain that was anchoring a line of buoys.  The bottom was very rocky in places with occasional huge boulders and under water pillars. A very interesting place to fish.

The fish could have been walleye, bass, carp, trout, white fish, burbot or perch. We didnt catch anything so who knows :)

I ended up getting mine from Cabellas on-line. They had a sale and free shipping deal that made it almost as cheap as anyplace else I was able to find on-line. I trusted them more than some e-bay company in case I needed to return it for some reason.

By the way that bessie thing in the first image is one of us lowering a 3oz bottom bouncer rig down to the bottom. There is a faint trace of the same thing in the third image.

On reflection, I am now thinking that the "chain" is actually a line of large 55 gallon drum buoys on the surface we were running more or less parallel to. The octopus looking thing in the third image are the large cables tying it down in the center - I think.
