Title: ALL SI Models - GPS receiver pigtail connector
Post by: Jolly Roger on February 02, 2010, 03:02:14 PM
Model:
ALL GPS Models
Suggested Upgrade:
GPS receiver pigtail connector
Explanation:
Having the GPS receiver's pigtail wires equiped with a female NMEA COM connetor would enable NMEA output to PC / Laptop on the water. Currently one has to splice a cable to the pigtail wires. That means either cutting the NMEA COM connector off of an ASPC2 cable or getting a RS232 cable and start fiddling around with that. If a female NMEA COM connector is attached to the pigtail one can plug in the ASPS2 pc connection cable and is ready to go for outputting NMEA data on the water AND still can use the ASPC2 cable at home for updates / downloads etc.

I Would like to keep it as pigtail, so I kan easily connect my VHF and NMEA Multiplexer to it.

Good point too Hendrik.
So I suggest a female NMEA COM connector plus a male NMEA COM connector with bare wires for Hendrik and others who have more equipment to hook up.

Harry,

After our discussion this morning I would have to agree.  Have a NMEA plug coming off the GPS and then have a connector with pigtails, or connector with DB9, pc connect cable, etc.

Another though on this one which came up on my mind:
If we could have a female connector to the pigtail, it would be even better to have the pigtail equipped with the fourth (green) wire.
Then we could send data to the unit on the water like modified waypoints or routes created in HumminbirdPC without disconnecting and reconnecting the ASPC-2 and GPS cable.

I don't know if this would work or if this would creat problems with the GPS receiver, but as far as I understood, the unit will go in "PC connect" mode as soon as it detects HumminbirdPC.

My 2 cents.
