Title: Organization of names/routes/ & waypoints
Post by: hannibal mike on February 11, 2013, 01:31:21 PM
I am just getting started with the storage of images etc and would like to hear ideas of how to name and organize the areas that I fish.  For example, I fish mainly different types of catfish and their habitat is different (current vs cover).  Since I live on the Mississippi River, that is a main area, but there are times that I am on local lakes or other rivers in Missouri.  Rather than trial & error, I would appreciate your thoughts for codes and groups.

This has me wondering if the question is too difficult or too easy to consider.  Perhaps it is too personal?  Kinda like a golf swing, maybe?

    Unfortunately I can't help you with a method as I use a pencil and paper.
    A 3x5 card. GPS coordinates, depth, what's there, line of site to landmarks note, etc.
    I was surprised that no one posted in 30 days.
    I imagine that most would have a letter and number system that makes sense to them.

I guess what threw me off was storing Images?  Are you asking about creating folders on your computer to store images and recordings or the naming of waypoints on your unit for the different areas you fish?

As an inexperienced owner, I was thinking of establishing routes/waypoints to fish.  Accurate locations to structure was my goal.  The storage of images taken was a secondary goal, but perhaps I should consider storing images.  Another thread talked of fishing long submerged brush whereas my interest would be more for anchoring to fish for catfish ie. wing dike tips, submerged foundations, or sunken vehicles.  Do you use separate cards for each lake, specie of fish, or just have a code system that IDs fish/season/etc?  Thanks

I use a 2-point waypoint management system ...

*Point 1 is what media did I use to create the waypoint (HB unit, Humviewer, OziExplorer)...
*Point 2 is the verified type of structure at that waypoint....

*Point 1 is used as a numeric/letter base system to where I know which media (medium?) the original waypoint was marked so that if I ever need to edit that exact point, I know where to locate the original for editing also....

Example 1....if the waypoint was created on the HB unit, then any waypoint editing needs to take place in the HB unit itself...as well as HBPC....

Example 2...if the waypoint was created in Humviewer, then any waypoint editing needs to take place on the HB unit itself, HBPC, and in Humviewer....

Example 3...if the waypoint was created in OziExplorer, then any waypoint editing needs to take place on the HB unit itself, HBPC, and in OziExplorer....

My personal designations are like..:
WP0001, WP0002, etc = waypoint marked in the HB unit...
R10001, R20002, etc = waypoints marked in the Humviewer program (R0001, R0002, etc is the sequential assignment number the HB unit assigns to the current recording-I shorten this some by removing the zeros to "R1, R2 then add sequential waypoint numbers made in that particular recording...)
OZ0001,  OZ0002, etc = waypoints marked in the OziExplorer program

*Point 2 is a letter designation system that tells what type of structure that waypoint is (if I have actually verified the structure)..

My personal designations are like..:
s = stakebed
b = brush
r = rocklike
p = underwater pond or sinkhole
f = house foundation
u = unknown

So then what this does for me is ...when I'm fishing and I see a marked waypoint on my chart labeled like R1001b...:
- "R1 represents the HB unit assigned recording designation (shortened) being viewed in Humviewer when I created the waypoint...
- "001" represents the 1st waypoint I created in that particular HV recording...
- "b" represents the structure is a brushpile....

If that waypoint name is labeled OZ001f...
-"OZ" represents that waypoint was created in The OziExplorer program....
-"001" represents the sequential number of the waypoint...
-"f" represents that structure is a house or building foundation...

I am OCD....can you tell...? ? :)

Rickie

PS... I have learned from experience that when the HB unit labels a waypoint as 001, then I create and import a waypoint from Humviewer labeled 001, then I create and import a waypoint from OziExplorer labeled 001.....................

My unit doesn't play nice.....with duplicate labeled waypoints......

My "system" is not nearly as sophisticated as rnvinc's...

Once I've marked waypoints, both via the unit and Humminbird PC, I rename them on Hbird PC based on "local" names for the area, or something in particular that I'd remember.  For example MnowHlw1 (Minnow Hollow 1).   You can also change the icons in PC, for example I change marinas to a "ramp" icon.

Then, I organize them into Groups (via HBird PC) with each Group being a lake, or particular area of a lake.

I've also read, somewhere, that Groups could be seasonal or species related.

    I think your best bet is to create a system that makes sense to you.
    Use any or all of the tools available.
    We are looking for specific targets; boats, bridges, foundations, and one other that I'll let
    you know of when and if we find it.
    One other suggestion if you haven't done so yet would learn how to make recordings on your 998.
    This has helped me form a better mental picture of what's down there.
    Reviewing the recordings in Humviewer will be eye opening.

Awesome, but a bit intimidating.  I will start practicing with recording, using HBPC, Humview, etc.  Like many people who embrace computer usage later in life, I often have the fear of "Breakage" for lack of a better term.  I am fortunate that there is little harm if I need to delete and start again.  Thanks for taking time to post solutions/suggestions.

You should design your personal waypoint management criteria to best suit your needs...

The important thing to remember is...:
Never have 2 waypoints of the same name in the unit at 1 time...
Occassionally export the Nav data to HBPC (and check for odd looking numbers) to prevent corrupt waypoints from occurring...
