Title: 997 waypoint file type
Post by: h2owolf on November 26, 2012, 03:27:15 PM
Can someone tell me what file type does the waypoints have when downloaded to sd card?

I think I saved them in computor, but can't find them, need to do a search.

Thanks in advance,

The final file name on the SD card, in the MATRIX folder is DATA.HWR.
But, a file that Humminbird PC can modify will have a .GPX extention.

IT,

I found file, downloaded it to SD, inserted into unit & it won't upload???
Am I doing something wrong?

Also and this happened prior to this, about 6 months ago, whenever I use right SD slot, when any SD or Hot maps SD is inserted into this slot,
unit shuts down immediately, also unit is sporadically locking up & I have to unplug it.
Any thoughts on this or have other units done this?

h2owolf,
Which file did you find; the DATA.HWR file or one with the .GPX file extension?

If the DATA.HWR file than it needs to be copied to the memory card but in a folder named MATRIX.  Easiest way to do this is to export the navigation data you have on your 997 unit now and then simply replace the DATA.HWR file it makes on the memory card with the one you found on your computer.

If this is a GPX file, then you need to open it up on your computer using the HumminbirdPC program and upload it to the memory card.

That could be several things: problem with the card reader for that slot, corrupt navigation data on your unit or it could just be that you are moving the unit just right when you install the map/memory card that the power cable loses contact for a millisecond and shuts down or locks up the unit.  Try slightly bending the gold pins in the power cable away from each other.  I do mean slightly too – so much so that you cannot see that you have bent them.

It is the DATA.HWR file, I didn't see one for GPX, how do you get HWR file to a Matrix file????
I don't have any way points now on unit, lost them when I updated to the new 6 revision.
I downloaded these to computer prior to uploading.
Does SD card need to be formatted again?

You should still be able to do this even if you don't have any waypoints in the unit.
Formating the memory card should not be needed but if you want to do so than do a FULL FORMAt and not a Quick Format of it.

Greg,

Not sure what your telling me,
this DATA.HWR file is on my computer & I downloaded it to SD card, then tried to upload into 997 unit.
How do you change DATA.HWR file to a MATRIX??
Is this only file type that will upload?
When I downloaded it from unit it was DATA file, all I did was save it to computer, where does MATRIX come from?

I guess see if you can export the waypoints in humminbirdpc to a csv file and then open it with spreadsheet. (I'm not sure if Humminbird PC can do that)

h2owolf:
I think what Greg meant was MATRIX folder, not file.
The DATA.HWR file needs to be in the MATRIX folder
on the SD card.

I think if you put the SD card in your unit, it will
automatically create a MATRIX folder on it.

If not, then put your SD card into your computer
via an SD card reader.
From Windows Explorer, click on the drive with
the SD card, then File, New, Folder, 'MATRIX'.

I definitely will, will go tomorrow & Sat.

Also, add that you have to "rename" the folder MATRIX, it doesn't appear anywhere as an option.

Anyway, someone with no IT skills (me) got it done!!

I find it easier to create the Matrix folder by exporting the navigation data from the unit.  The unit will make the correct folder name and location and it lets me know that the unit is correctly communicating with the memory card (I have had several die on me over the years).

Greg,

I will try that,
but I lost all way points in unit & what I had saved in my computer didn't have a MATRIX folder designation.
I'am glad it worked after just renaming the folder & putting Data file in it.
