I'm on the horns of a dilemma. I have a 1197c SI on the stbd side of the console top of my 23' Jones CC, and a 798c SI on my soon-to-be-sold C-Hawk 18' CC. Only issue with the 1197 mounted console- top is it can be a bit hard to see over depending on hull angle, but generally not a problem, and I'm used to it. Recently bought a used 1910 Jones, and need to decide what to do about the GPS/sonar for that boat. Can just get new mounting bracket, cables, GPS receiver., transducer, etc. for the 1197, and switch the unit between boats as I need it....can only use one boat at a time. Won't transfer the 798 as the screen is OK, but too small for my old eyes to see underway w/o reading glasses on. New 1197 bracket, etc. is about $350-475 on-line, depending on which GPS receiver. A new 1198 is too expensive, so I've looked at a 998c SI at Bass Pro. Was disappointed at how much smaller the screen seemed compared to the 1198 next to it...I love that big 1197/98 screen, as I can see everything w/o glasses. I can get a new 998c SI (2012 model) for about $1300, plus another $180 for the Navionics chip. Or I can just switch the chip betwen units as I need it.
So...I'm, looking for informed opinions. Switch the 1197 between boats as needed, or buy a new 998c SI for the 1910? Either unit will be mounted on the console top, and it's the same size console both boats. I have no trouble seeing the 1197 screen, but have reservations about the 998 screen.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
