I just bought a new boat and the dealer was attempting to install the above listed equipment and told me the side imaging or down imaging would not work with  the trolling motor integrated transducer and we had to use the included transduce and place it over the built in Transducer for the Side Imaging and Down imaging to work and then you have to deal with all the additional wires running up the trolling motor.

What is the purpose of an integrated transducer if none of it works with the 897 unit? The information on Humminbirds site clearly says it is compatible. The dealer said the only way was to install the included transducer on the trolling motor or to place it on the transom.

HELP anyone experiencing this problem?

Perhaps I don't understand your question, but....

The trolling motor built in transducer (Universal Sonar) is a 2D transducer only.  It is not capable of Side Imagaing or Down Imaging.  If you want that capability on the TM, you would have to add the SI transducer.  So, Your dealer was correct.  What I can't answer is how to avoid covering up the Universal Sonar with the SI ducer.  Perhaps, there is not enough room.

The USll transducer is compatible with the 897.

What does the the integrated transducer do if it does not have side imaging or down imaging? One of the reasons I bought the Terrova was to eliminate the excess wires of an additional transducer and it just doesn't seem right to be required to have two transducers on the trolling motor one of which is not usable. Is there any of Humminbird fish finders compatible with the integrated transducer on the Terrova I-Pilot Link?

It does traditional 2d sonar only!  And is compatible with most units.  But if you want side or down imaging on the trolling motor, this is the way you have to go for this TM.

What do you have in place when the trolling motor is not in the water? Do you have another transducer on the transom?

you really dont want a side image transducer on the trolling motor. each time the trolling motor turns it will distort the side image. and with i pilot thats a lot. it would be better if you mount the transducer on the transom and use a y adaptor to hook both transducers to your humminbird. this is what a lot of guys do. I have a 798 on the bow and 998 on my console. ethernet connects them together. the 798 is using the 2d transducer in trolling motor and shares the side image transducer with the 998 on the transom. this works great for me. I'm able to share waypoints, share transducers and even gps. Just my $.02

Actually a lot of fishermen do use the Si sonar on the trolling motor and find it quite useful.  Guess its just like any other tool and it is how you will use it (or if you will use it) that counts.

Humminbird 898C HD SI Combo communicating with the Terrova I-Pilot Link
« Reply #8 on: April 21, 2013, 10:40:35 PM »
I recently purchased the Humminbird 898C HD SI Combo and a Terrova 80lb I-Pilot Link and the foot control and the remote are working fine but the System Ready light on the Terrova does not come on nor does the Humminbird indicate it is receiving a signal from the Terrova so many of the main features obviously not work.

I have read every thing I can and can't seem to find  the problem. Any suggestions? I don't think they have to be connected by an Ethernet Cable for them to communicate to each other.

I have also connected with the proper switch a 797C to the same  SI transducer that came with the 898C.

Help is appreciated?

Do

rocketman,
The iPilot Link has to be connected to the 898c HD Si unit via the Ethernet cable connections to be able to communicate with it.  There is no wireless communication between the iPilot Link and a Humminbird unit.  You will also have to be running the current 6.610 software on the 898c HD Si unit for it to work.

Thanks Greg,

The manual for the 898C HD SI says it can be connected to the main slot or the Ethernet port. Are you saying that the cable from the Terrova I-Pilot Link should be plugged into the Ethernet port on the back of the 898C or does it go from the 898C to the 797C2?

Sorry, this is all greek to me.

Greg,

Is that a separate cable that fits the Ethernet port or is that the cable that goes from the Terrova to the Ethernet Port on the back of the 898C HD SI and how do you know what software you are running?

Don,
The iPilot Link cable should be plugged into the Ethernet connector on the 898c HD Si unit.

The 797c2 unit is not a part of this system and so would not be connected to either the iPilot Link or the 898c HD Si unit.

To check the software running on your unit: Power the unit on and while it is showing the opening title screen (shows something like “Humminbird 898c HD Si”), press the MENU button.  The screen will show three options: select “System Status” by using the four-way arrow keypad and activate it by using the Right Arrow key.  The unit should than show you the software version in about the middle of the display.

Thanks Greg,

The problem is there are only 3 cables coming from the Terrova and they were plugged in to the back of the 898 and there are no extra cables except the one for the built in transducer, I am not using that one because I am using the side image transducer on the transom. Does the Ethernet cable plug into that cable and then back to the Ethernet Port on the 898? You would think all the cables needed for them to communicate would be included. Sorry to be so dense and I appreciate your help.

Don,
According to page 6 of the iPilot Link manual that I downloaded from Minn Kota:
Item 18 is a 490389-1 CABLE, ETH (M12-M-M12-F, 30’.  This is used to connect the IPilot Link to your Humminbird unit (see pages 23 & 24).  This would be the only cable connecting the iPilot Link and the 898 unit.
