Hate to say it, but looks like I'm out of business for the next couple of weeks.
Drove out to get some fuel and after leaving the mooring the screen of my 981 looked like the readouts from the left side were smeared all over the screen. Couldn't get the unit shut down, so I had to pull the plug. After a restart the unit worked normal for about 5 minutes but than the screen froze up and I unplugged again.
Did this three times and restored to default, but now the screen is blacked out and the unit seems pretty dead.
Called Ian at G-Comm. He suggested to try a reboot with a different software, but that didn't work since the screen is still black. Looks like a hardware problem.
Dammit! Gonna send it back to the UK and hope to get it back within a week or two.
Buuhuhuuu :'(

Definitely sounds terminal. Hopefully they can get you fixed back up ASAP and back on the water.

Thanks for cheering me up guys!
Been out today.... for swimming!
Strange how fast one gets addicted to a machine, hehe.
The unit went out by airmail. Hopefully it will be back next week.
Dropped Ian a note that I wouldn't start crying, if it can't be repaired and Johnson Outdoors Europe would send a 997 or 1197 back as an replacement ;).
Keep scanning and happy hunting

Update:
Called G-Comm today. The unit arrived and went over to Johnson Outdoors.
Hopefully I'll get it back next week. So far no word what's wrong with it.

Bad luck and that during the best months for diving.....I feel the pain too.
Hope you get it back soon, perhaps a 997 8)
Hendrik are you connected to Johnsson europe or something and can help out?

No, but I tested a 987 and it is for sale now.

Deserter!
That looks like I'll be left as the last veteran of the once so proud 981/987 community, buhuhu :'( !
No, wait a minute...
A reason more to get a 997 as a replacement, 'cause now I'm sort of a member of an endangered species??
Gonna ask Ian what he thinks about this now....

Ha!
Got my 981 back yesterday (thanks Anne and Ian!) after Mark from Johnson Outdoors checked it. He couldn't find anything, so he suggested to check the cabling and installation on the boat. Nothing wrong there as well ??? .
Went out to the Swiss border to watch the fireworks for the Swiss National Day. These guys are nuts! 30 minutes of firework, shooting the crap out of the sky. The smoke from it was so heavy, that we waited for 15 minutes to see something again before we took off. The kids really loved it. Cool stuff!
The even cooler stuff showed up on the way back to the mooring:

Looks even better in the HummVee:

Maybe some part of the LANCASTER bomber that ditched in this area in 1944 and was salvaged in the 1950s or maybe another wreck? I'll go down next week to check out what it is.
Keep your fingers crossed!
