Transducer not installed
« on: May 04, 2013, 11:59:47 PM »
I have an older 798 C SI not HD. I upgraded the transducer to a 180T To try an get better images. I haven't had it in the water, but when I turn the unit on it says "transducer not installed" and goes to demo mode. I double checked the transducer number on humminbird website and should be compatable. Sonar is on. Tried 200 and 200/83 and different transducer settings. All there is is Compact side scan, quad beam, and universal. I was able to get it out of demo mode once at startup. I could hear a clicking from the ducer. Is this what i have to do everytime I use it or is it because its not in the water?

I was able to get it on the water today. It still starts in demo mode. I was able to get it out of demo. I notice I don't have water temp, Is that a seperate sensor on the larger units? I also noticed that the depth was not as stable as with the compact ducer. I was in shallow water- deepest spot was 4 foot. The unit depth bounced from 2 to 20 foot when sitting still. Is this comon with the transducer upgrade? Starting to think I wasted a bunch of money.

It should work but sounds instead like you got a transducer with at least a bad temperature sensor.  Contact the Humminbird Customer Resource folks about getting it swapped out with another one.  This may take care of your bottom reading issues too.

Thanks Greg. Do you think an earlier version firmware would make a difference?

Probably not, but what software version are you running now?
You are aware that when you update the software that the unit is supposed to reset all of the menus back to the factory default settings.  This may have changed a menu setting and is causing the depth bounce, especially in shallow water.

If your 798c Si unit worked okay on the compact Side imaging (CSi) transducer, than it should work okay on the HDSi transducer.  I would wait until you get the new HDSi transducer before trying anything for the depth readings.
