First day on water......
« on: July 10, 2012, 10:22:18 PM »
Words can't even describe it. No wonder these pros are pros! However, couple questions.... Charged my craking battery night prior and 10 minutes into having unit on I get a  low voltage. As the day progresses, my images become much worse, the right side of my SI imaging is barely showing while left is still full view also get lines/interference when operating motor. Now I know what all this leads up to but my primary question is I don't even have my 858 hooked up and I'm already having this much trouble with just my 898 so can I put an additional battery in and run BOTH HB units or will I get major interference? Btw the 898 turned a die hard lawrence fan into a HB believer!
Thank you all ahead of time..
Blair

Welcome!

A stand-a-lone battery is the only way to go.

I run four units on one battery and have no interference.

Also check that the transducer wire does not run close to other boat wiring.

I stashed a small gel cell up in the very front of the bow, and drilled two holes about eight inches apart with which I fitted two metal posts and attached wires and the hm unit so it has it's own battery in the front. It's out of the way and I can still charge it. BTW I replaced the board that was up there with a bamboo cutting board:)

I would recommend you get some time on the water and experience with the
898 before hooking up the 858.  Get the 898 dialed in really good.
That way, when you do hook up the 858, you will be able to tell immediately
if you have any interference issues between the two units.

Also, if you have a trolling motor, try and keep the sonar wires away from the
trolling motor wires.

The 858 will be delivered tomorrow so with that being said, you know it has to go on! I am doing my best on reading the manual and interpreting the info into realtime while out there. I was also wondering what size battery I could get away with if I am only going to run the 898 and 858 up to it?? The TM wires are ran on the opposite side of the boat so hopefully I will be good there.
Thanks again gentleman

I think the smallest marine deep cycle battery you can find
would probably be adequate.
You're most likely not going to be running both units at the
same time anyway.

Here's a couple threads on this very subject.
I use both the 898c si and 858 at the same time. But they're on separate
batteries. The 898 at the console is set to down and side imaging
while I'm at the bow with the 858 set to switchfire and Lakemaster mapping nav.
Then when I go to the console I turn sonar off on front unit and put it to full screen nav
so i can see a larger view of the lake. Both units are set on a ram mount so i can spin them
to monitor whats going on from any location in the boat which is only 17 feet.
Good luck and enjoy:)

Second day on water......
« Reply #8 on: July 14, 2012, 09:27:50 PM »
Ok,
I went ahead and bought a deep cycle battery for the 898 and 858 only. I hooked everything up then first turned on the 858 which works perfect. Turned the 898 on and it said low voltage again. Went into system status and it shows I am receiving 11.9V. Also, the rt side of my side imaging is still less defined as the left as well as interference with use of my outboard->lines shoot across the image with ROM increase. I'm on shift today, but tomorrow I am going to try an hook the 858 up with the power cord running my 898 to see if it's in a connection somewhere. If not, any ideas???
Thanks,
Keenan

Kblair85, Check the ALARMS MEMU>LOW BATTERY ALARM. Reset to lower battery voltage. Check for interference with the motor off then with the motor running.

Post a few pix of the transducer install.

Post a few screen shots from each unit.

Post trouble shooting finds/fixes.

Good luck Roddy
