Title: Helix 12 Mega SI - Transom Mounting

Looking for advice on the best location to mount the XM 9 20 MSI T transducer on a Stratos 186 VLO.

Based on answers to similar posts, I suspect that I'll have to add a Thru Hull XP 9 20 transducer via an MS SI DB Y cable to get depth readings at speed, but need advice on where to mount the SI transducer on the transom.

Also, since the Helix is a CHIRP model, if I do have to add the XP 9 20 Thru Hull, will I have to switch between transducers via the Menu to see depth at speed via the XP 9 20, versus CHIRP etc. from the XM 9 20 MSI T that comes with the Helix?

I've added pics of my transom (I hope!), and any advice would be most welcome.

maybe you could exchange your mega ducer for the thru hull :http://www.humminbird.com/Products/XPTH-9-20-MSI-T/ since you where going with thru hull anyway but it is big 7.34 inches long x 3 wide  if i get a mega thats what i will do they have an exchange program if you don't open the packaging directly with hummingbird.

The actual thru hull (XPTH 9 20 MSI T) Dan mentions above is a valid option (I have read the thru hull MEGA xducers are on backorder not being produced yet) ...

To answer your questions ...:

You are correct that using the XP 9 20 shoot thru and the AS MSIDB Y cable will allow both high speed depth readings and allow mounting the expensive XM 9 20 MSI T higher on the transom for protection ...

1. You should mount the XM 9 20 MSI T up on the 2nd step as low as possible for the SI beam to pass under the motor mount bracket ... Closer to the motor mount will help the SI beam pass under the mount ...but don't get so close to the mount as to allow the motor turn to hit the xducer ...

2. The AS MSIDB Y cable disconnects the 2d channel going to the XM 9 20 MSI T and Instead connects the XP 9 20 in its place - all the time - there is no switching in the menus ...

3. CHIRP is a function of the transmit signal created by the sounder in the head unit .. 2d CHIRP performance from the XP 9 20 will be the same as from the 2d piezo in the XM 9 20 MSI T ...

I'm wondering if mounting the XM 9 20 MSI T directly under the motor mount (see 2nd pic) would work.  I believe there is room there without the motor hitting it (see last pic where motor is trimmed all the way in) and that would place it below everything else on the transom while providing it protection.

Assuming it fits lengthwise, would that be a good location?

Correct ... The idea being that the SI beams actually reach all the way to the water's surface ...

Closer to the motor mount will be less likely to block some of the SI beam ...
