898C SI first impressions and advice needed.
« on: January 20, 2011, 01:12:31 AM »
52* out today and no ice so took the 898c si out today.

I have poor eyesight and screen is a liitle small. I am building a pedestal to raise it up and move it closer to help that problem.

Screen was bright and clear.

The side imaging is amazing. Seeing and being able to follow the creek channel was most impressive. Saw fish and school of baitfish in the channel too. Now I know why I always catch fish there :)

Not thrilled with the 2d and downimaging modes but i'm sure thats just me. I believe I need to play with settings and get used to it. I am so used to my Lorance greyscale and am confident what I am seeing with that.

GPS worked well and was easy to use. The whole unit seems easy enough to use. Overall I am very happy with it. I'm sure once I use it more I will understand everything better.

They Lake I fish has virtually no weeds. Max depth is 70' and I normally fish bank to 30'. I only use it at trolling motor speed which maxes at 2mph so usually scanning at 1mph or so. I have side set to 100' now.

Any setings anyone can reccomend other than default that may help me out and also Si scroll speed? And my normal 15-20' depth i fish which transducer(s) do I choose?

I will figure out screenshot and recording next time out.

Thanks....Bill

Bill congrats on your purchase.I bought the same unit (898) not to long ago and we built a thing to raise it up so I could see the unit better. I'll post pics later. The screen shots you see on the internet are alot bigger (to me) than what you can see on the lake. Mine I have to run sensitivity way up (14-18) to get it brite enough for me to see. Go download the 5.210 update and read and learn as much as you can.I've had mine on the lake 3 times now and it's making more since everytime I go on the water. Good luck to you.

As with most electronics these days....you can get the item to power on when taken out of the box.  To get the optimal performance from the item it takes experience.
Forums such as this one can shorten the learning curve and help with initial setup getting you into the operation quicker. Help with intrepreting the display is a big feature here also.

Sonar will work right out of the box but it is the learning curve that make the difference is usage.

Good luck and dont forget to post observations, pictures and your experience here so that others can learn also..
Chuck

I generally keep my SI distance to 2-3 times the depth I'm in...usually set at 60ft left and right (or less) to get the best images....

I also keep "SI Enhance" up on my SI screen at all times so I can change the sensitivity up/down to brighten/darken the screen as the depth changes...

Higher sensitivity brightens the screen/Lower sensitivity darkens the screen..

I also set the chart scroll speed to match the boat speed...setting 1 at 1mph, setting 2 at 2mph, etc....

Side imaging in 20' of water is on 75' to both sides. I am very happy with the side imaging image and clarity.

I still need practice with the 2d and DI screens.

I was able to succesfully locate the creek channel on a 20' flat yesterday and mark fish. I caught three LM bass from 15-17". Water was 37-38*!!!. I used a 1/8 oz Shakey head with a 6" fineses worm. My first ever winter bass.

Thanks all...Bill

I use the Sensitivity setting as a "Brightness" setting....

SI screen gets brighter in shallower water...therefore a lower sens setting...
SI gets darker in deeper water....therefore a higher sens setting.....
