2nd transducer
« on: March 10, 2013, 01:17:29 AM »
If I use a 2nd transducer and a y cable will I still be able to use the 200/83khz DI and the normal 2d image?

Absolutely.  The Y cable will just seperate the Left and Right SI transducer signal.  The right transducer still uses everything but the left SI beam.  The left transdcuer only uses the left SI beam.

That’s if the y-cable you use is the AS-Si-LR-Y cable.

If you are using the AS-Si-DB-Y cable you will still be able to use the 200/83kHz 2D sonar data but it will only come from the Dual Beam transducer that is connected.  The left/Right Si, Di and Water temperature will all come from the Si transducer.

Is this a good idea to use 2 transducers on the 998c?

It can be.

Depending on your boat and how it is set up you may have to go with a two transducer system in order to get both sides of the Si sonar to work or even to get the conventional 2D sonar to work at high-speeds.

Some boats need neither but their owners want to mount the Si transducers in a more protected area and install a 2D transducer in another location for high-speed depth readings.  Those Si transducers get expensive when you start knocking them off on rocks and stumps!

Should both transducers be the same like XHS-9-HDSI-180 T ?

Yes if you are having to mount a Si transducer on each side of the motor (or other obstruction on the boat) to get unblocked Si sonar to each side for your 998c Si unit.

Thanks Greg,
My motor fits tight to the stern of the boat which shows up on the side imaging page of the 998.
While reading  on the forum I figured out the problem I was having.

I have 2 new 998 Hd si units I am preparing to install. What transducer should I order for installing in the bilge area of my 2006 Skeeter 20i for high speed running?

XP-9-20
You will also neeed either the AS-Si-DB-Y dualbeam splitter cable or a TS3 Transducer Switch.  Most use the AS-Si-DB-Y cable.

Thank you for responding so quickly. I will have a couple more questions for you on this install.
Such as the size wire to use for powering them, etc.
Thanks again.

I would use a 14 AWG multi-stranded copper wire with a blade type fuse holder and 3 amp fuse.  Solder and seal all connections.  The wire size is a bit of an over-kill but that really depends on how long the extension wires really are.

Thanks for the info. I have ordered in the Ancor Marine twisted pair wire w/ shield in the 14/2. I do plan on soldering and sealing all the connections.
Also; here is a list of what I am working with and/or ordering in.
2 - Hummingbird 998C HD SI combo units
2 - RAM mounts RAM-D-111U-C
2 - Transducer Shields  TM-HDsi
1 - Transducer Shields L bracket   LB-SM
2 - black transducer straps  for the trolling motor  HD TS-B
1 - Ethernet Cable  AS EC 20 E
1 - AS-Syslink  20' Y-cable
1 - AS-Si-DB-Y Cable

And I was leaning toward the XP-9-20T transducer and use the temp probe in the livewell but am not sure if it will be a problem in checking temp in livewell and surface water temp from the SI transducer mounted on the jackplate. If it is too cumbersome a procedure; I will go with the XP-9-20 transducer instead.

BTW..... My wife says that after all I am spending on this that I had better catch some bass in tournaments...LOL.

Thanks for all the help with this project.

fast talker,
Why the As-SysLink cable?  Both 998c HD Si units will come with their own GPS Receivers.

When using the As-Si-DB-Y cable, the temperature sensor in the XP-9-20-T will not be connected.  So get the XP-9-20 instead.  The read the water temperature in the livewell, purchase the TG-W auxiliary Temperature Sensor.

Okay; I will go with the XP-9-20 and see about the TG-W auxiliary temp sensor. Will it plug straight to the unit?
The reason for the As-SysLink cable is that I had to replace 8 GPS reciever modules in the POS Lowrance set up that I am replacing and I wanted to run both 998's off one GPS reciever module and save the other for back up. Also; to keep from drilling more holes in the boat.

Thanks so much for the help on this. The other company's customer service was the least helpful I have run across. They had me replacing wiring harnesses for years plus telling me that the heat from the sunlight was burning out the GPS reciever modules. The last straw was when they told the dealer's mechanic that after all the replacing of wirings and modules; that, it had to be 2 bad 520C units after all but even though they called the shots since we installed them (and had trouble from day one) that they would not warranty the units. So for 4+ years they gave us the run around. That is why I am spending $5,000.+ to switch to Hummingbird.

Yes the TG-W will plug straight into the 998 unit fast talker.

I would install the second GPS Receiver so that each unit will be able to mark more accurate waypoints (GPS Receiver installed as close to the transducer that unit is using makes for more accurate waypoints).  Should one of the GPS Receivers go out on you than can switch that unit to use the other unit’s GPS Receiver through the Ethernet system.
