Title: GPS data not showing for my area in CT (798c si)
Post by: neeper67 on May 09, 2011, 10:37:31 AM
I have just purchased a 798c SI and I live in CT. The chartplotter GPS does not show any data for my area such as depths and buoys.

Is this a problem with my GPS? I see that in NY it shows readings of depth and buoys?

I have found myself using the NOAA maps after I bought this unit, which really stinks. (eventhough I love the Noaa map detail)

should I call Humminbird? What can be done.

HB does not make maps so u might look for guys in your area that have another mapping system.
Some of the folks here can also help with their maps they use...

neeper67,
Got some coordinates that someone could look at for this?  It may be that there is no data on the built-in maps for that area.  You may have to look into buying a Navionics Marine Chart for that area to get more detail on the unit.

The HB map is very basic and does not contain a lot of detail. Navionics and others have produced maps for sale that will get into much more detail althought not all areas are covered.
Mapping has always been an issue for the base units in almost any manufacture due to the large cost in getting the data and then mapping it out..
Some places are not worth the cost to the company.
But then again no one ever said any of this stuff is cheap.
We can only write suggestions to the Hb folks and see if they want to help..

Thanks for the replys,

Here are the coordinates:

041 02.658 N
073 27.525 W

I am unsure why HB would not include my area. I really dont want to have to buy the $165.00 maps from Navionics.

I called HB, but they were not too helpful, they told me a manager would call my back, but have not heard from them since I placed the call last week.

I am wondering if its only my unit that is not showing the data.

Looks like the data was not included for that area.
Humminbird did not do this as this is a package of map data that we bought for the units.

Maybe it is a south vs north thing left over from the war.... ::)
I would guess that to make maps for the entire bodies of water for the USA would be so expensive we could not afford them....
Although some other manufactures do have a larger selection..

I don’t know why they would have left out one area and not another.  The map data is from Navionics so I really doubt that it is a North versus South thing.  From the Navionics web site: “Navionics US headquarters based in Wareham, Massachusetts”

Maps can only be so big before becomming an issue with loading.
To have an map that covers the entire USA would have to have external drives for the unit. And certainly a faster processor.
Then again only the most used bodies will be show in any detail baseed on user feed back or high profile lakes or rivers.
Maybe we should just install google maps on all units.
Greg has plenty of time to do this... ;D... :P... :-\
