Depth Readings Going "Wacky" when 1198 & 998 both running
« on: July 16, 2011, 11:25:55 AM »
Just got my 1198!!! I was on KY Lake the past 2 days wih the new unit. I'm running both a 998 and 1198 linked with ethernet everything is working well HOWEVER every 30 minutes or so one of the 2 units will show I'm in 300+ sometimes 1000+ water depths (actual depths <20') and the side imaging stops on that particular unit when this happens. Facts so far:
1. The problem occurs with either unit and even after I disconnect the ethernet
2. The problem goes away the instant I shut one unit down
3. The problem lasts for a period of time 20-30 min+ then clears itself up and runs well for a longer period of time, then reoccurs
4. Both units have their own transducer : 1198 on transom 998 on trolling motor. The ducers are approx. 19' apart from each other
5. Problem only occurs with one unit at a time. One will read accurately while the other doesn't.
6. I have gone back and forth with water type settings from fresh to salt water and the results are the same.
7. I called HB Customer Service from the water they were great, but they were also at a loss for why it was occuring. Funny thing, both units worked fine while I had "their momma" on the phone (HB HQ)

are both units hooked up to the same power supply. I used to have the same problem when both were on the same battery on regular depth finder units.

They are both powered by the same boat battery, yes, but hooked into that battery from different terminals.
Do you run your devices from different batteries?

Tim, how did you separate the circuits? I'd like this. I have an accessory panel on the bow that powered by the cranking battery, thats powering both fishfinders etc. I guess I'd have to trace this panel's supply wiring to the back where it hooks up to the battery and add another battery?

Had the same happend to my units. Hooked up isolated elect system.

1. Batt not wired into boat sys.
2. AC charger for batt.
3. TB fuse board.
4. ON/OFF switch,to cut the power.

This setup elimated a list of troubles!

Have fun and enjoy Roddy :)

Try turning up the Noise Filter menu in the unit showing the problem the next time out.  You can also try manually setting a Lower Range menu setting that is different than what the second unit is using.  I would set it at least 10 feet deeper.

Other than that there are three options available to you:

1. Live with it as is.
2. Turn the sonar on one unit off or turn the unit itself off.
3. Ethernet connect the 998 and 1198 units and have them share the sonar between them.  All you need is a cable to do this.
