798ci keep locking up
« on: January 22, 2015, 01:36:26 PM »
798ci non HD. Update 6.3 with only 21 hours of use.

It started acting up at the end of the day yesterday and would rebooting when I would try to mark a waypoint. Now when I turn it on it and hit exit to go past the blue warning screen it goes straight to the snapshot screen and locks up. The buttons will beep like it's doing something but it does nothing. Last night when I got home it would scroll through the other screens until you go to the snapshot screen then it would lock up. So it seems like it's getting worse.

Any ideas? It's wired straight to it's own group 31 deep cycle battery, I updated it to 6.3 the day I bought it and never had any problems until now.

Take out any SD Cards (including mapping cards)...

If you can get the unit to power up ... Try getting directly into the Main Menu and Restore Defaults ...

Is the 31 battery in good shape ...?? (I've heard of this very issue with low power supply before)...

Thanks for the reply.

I pulled the card and restored defaults. I even tried going back to the previous firmware 5.840 which didn't help, Then I went back to 6.300 and it still did the same thing. After research I found out about hitting the view button and getting to the matrix boot screen and tried the firmware update there, with no luck. It still locked up on any navigation screen and then all the sudden it's locked on the matrix boot screen when i turn it on and won't go out of it.

Also I have 3 batteries in the boat I load tested all of them and they test good. I tried to swap the unit to a different battery just to rule it out and still same result.

It seems like it's getting worse every time I turn it on.  I guess my next thing would be to call HB and see what they say. It was bought in September of 2012 so I know it's way out of warranty. Just stinks to only have 21 hours on something and it break and costs you more money...

I rigged up a as-pc2 cable and I got the unit to work again by reloading 6.300. It scrolls through all the screens now without locking up, So we'll see if it works again.

It deleted all my waypoints and tracks so maybe it had a corrupt waypoint or something that needed to be cleared off?

Won't know if it works on the water or not for a few days. So we shall see.

This is good news so far ... Except for the lost Nav data of course ...

Good luck ...
