lines on image question
« on: February 20, 2011, 09:00:07 PM »
Long time reader, first time poster.  Been trying to figure out what is up with my 798. I get the lines at the top off the screen on DI and on the left hand side SI only.  They do not show up on the regular sonar.  I have update the software 3 time and reverted back to the old software as instructed through reading posts.  I have messed with ALL settings and nothing changes.  These lines are there whether or not the big motor is running. Ducer is mounted on the right side of transom. Tilting the motor clear up makes no difference. I even tried hooking the power to its own battery. Still there.  I just got this in December and the first time out with it it worked fine. It seemed to start this after i updated the software the first time but like i stated, reverting back had no effect. Thanks in advance for the help.ila_renderedila_renderedila_rendered

Give us some more details about your installation.  Single or dual transducer, accessories, Y Cables, etc.  Maybe a photograph of the transducer installation front/back and from the side.

Heres Some Basic troubleshooting:

Do you have a friend who has an SI unit on their boat?  If so, see if you can hook your unit up their transdcuer, gps, etc, and see if you get the same result.  If you get the same result, you know it must be something to do with your unit.

Try someone elses unit on your setup and see what happens.  If they get the same result you know its got to be in the transducer or wiring.

If not, you will most likely have to send your unit back to Humminbird to get checked out.  It may be the unit or the transdcuer.

Thanks for the info.  Unfortunatly i have no way to swap out equipment.  (unless the transducer off the 768 will give me down image???)    Single transducer that came with the unit is whats hooked up. Nothing else hooked to it . I also have a 768 mounted on the front deck.  I have moved the transducer for that model to the trolling motor and used the bracket it was hooked to on the transom to mount the new transducer for the 798.  I had no problems with the 768.  I will take some pics tomorrow and post.  Heading to Lake Fork later this week, was hoping it was a setting or something simple.  Thanks again.

Are you restoring the defaults before AND AFTER you do the updates?

Please post some picts of your transdcuer installation so we can definitively rule out any blockage.  What type of boat is it mounted on?

It looks to me like the transdcuer is angled up on the left and then the jack plate is right there, which may be what is causing the issue.

It may be just the angle of the picture, but I would check it to make sure.  It needs to be as level as possible.

I see what ur saying.  I checked it and it is level with the boat.  Would it hurt if i lowered it to clear the jack plate?

You're pinging the jackplate.  Lower the transducer 1" and it'll go away.

If you cannot lower the transducer than at least try twisting it counterclockwise and test it again to see if the lines went away or not.  I’m betting it’s the jackplate reflecting some of the sonar as well and lowering the transducer some more or twisting the transducer away from the jackplate will show this (or not!).

How much were you able to lower it?

i dropped it as far as it would go to check the theory.  I also reloaded the software twice while out with restore before and after the upgrades.

Greg i did not twist it cause i did not get that info until after i got back home but i will give that a try.

I took a new pic of the mount.  I know it "looks" tilted but i checked and re-checked it for level. (leveled the back deck of the boat then leveled the bottom of the transducer)  The thing works great. Found some great fish  and some huge bait balls today with it.  the lines are just distracting. Thanks

it does look tilted. if the lines are still there i would take it off the mount and temporarily attach it to something that someone could hold on to it ,away from the jack plate.good luck

Got back from lake fork and after looking at some transducer locations on ALL the boats down there, I moved it under the jack plate. Attached is a pic i ran across to support this.  I took the boat out today and all problems solved.  Worked like a humminbird should.  Thanks for all the advice on this problem. Oh by the way we caught three 8 plus pound pigs and several in the 5-7 pound range. Going back in 2 weeks.....WHOOOHOOOOO.
