Nothing ok with my unit 798 CI HD SI.
First, when start, all I see was a message "initialising". After this a white screen. And freeze. No action. Need to cut off power.
Then looked for solutions on Humminbird page and in tihs forum.
Decided to update firmware, based on posts.
Then I download update firmware 7.680 on official site.
Start uint pressing "VIEW" button. Showed screen with text:
MATRIX SERIES BOOT
VERSION
4.540 OCT 15 2010
and a menu... option.
Turn Off unit.
Then I inserted SD CARD with firmware file.
Turn ON pressing VIEW button.
Chosed option 8. DOWNLOAD TO RAM
Unit begin work with a message: "DOWNLOADING"
After a time appeared this ERROR MESSAGE: "FAILURE"
Tried others times, result is always this.
What is wrong?

As I live in Brazil, AS-PC3 buying option is not good.
Specially by a long time to receive it. More than, this by high custom taxes.
So, the option is do it myself.

Good and bad news.
I have done a cable to make connection from my notebook to my HB 798 with success.
My HB software reconized unit.
When try to "update", unit begins a percentual transfer and never finish it.
A message "failure" appears always.
Boostrap mode is the only way to do something different from white screen.

You don't have a problem with software. Change device Humminbird service. Most likely it will be Helix

The USB cable never worked for me.

It got a bit interesting there for a moment when my new USB-Serial adaptor decided to quit mid-update resulted in a bricked unit.
For a moment I thought I had to send the unit back for repair but after some thought I decided to get another USb-Serial adaptor from Bestbuy and it worked immediately after the second try.》
Better to find an old computer with COM port.

I have international firmwares in hands if you need them, see my attach image

I made an personal kit to connect unit, by RS232 and USB.
It was ok and fully functional.
But update procces never ends without error.
Always abort with error message.

My unit now is like a brick.
The cost to send to US is not effective.
A new unit, like Dragonfly 4 PRO, with WIFI and others new features is about U$ 285.00 + shipping
The service cost is U$ 240.00 + shipping X 2 (brazil to US and US to Brazil)
Simple: is much more cost than new and best unit.
I will give up it.

Any device breaks. You are guided by emotions, not common sense. This is your choice. Good luck.

Just by cost/benefits.
I consider that HB's policy is unreasonable. At least to foreign citizen, like me.
To solve the problem just need informations. but HB prefers to hide the solution.
Closed system, is not a good idea, specially in this condition.
I think I will post on youtube a video with the unit being destroyed by hammer, because have too high cost to send it for repair.
Sometimes policy is a strong factor to seller. In others it drives consumers away.
Garmin have much better policy and official support in Brazil.
But the choice based on cost/benefits is Raymarine Dragonlfy PRO series, with WIFI, that can be used in Android app, with navionics boating.

Explaining better: I am very disappointed and sad about the situation.
I spent more than $ 1200 on the purchase (2011) and another $ 180 on the transducer exchange, which was only used for 1 hour for testing. the unit was used for no more than 30 hours.

I can empathize with your frustration ... These things are quite an investment ...
International makes it even more challenging in dealing with a company in the states ...
