There are a bunch of us that use SI while fishing some very special rowboat-only waters. When I say rowboat, I mean NO motors of any kind (believe me, it is worth it). So, when we are moving we face backwards, which puts the side images on the opposite sides of the boat from how we are facing. It is more difficult than you may think to remember what is on the left of your scree is on the right side of your boat! To fix this, some of us have reversed the transducer, which degrades the image a bit, but also in my experience, puts a waypoint in the wrong place when you mark it on the SI screen. I have friends that disagree and say they don't have this issue with marking waypoints on the SI screen.
When I try to figure this out in my brain- I can't make left or right of it.
Can any of the experts here comment on the pros and cons of running a reversed SI transducer in our particular case?
HB- If you are listening, a reverse image mode for rowboaters, would sure make our lives easier...

Um, unless my brain is just totally mush (it is Friday after all…) I don’t see a problem with this. When you are facing backwards in the boat facing your Si unit (with the transducer mounted backwards); what shows in the left Si sonar beam is to your left and what shows in the right Si sonar beam is to your right. The GPS doesn’t know that anything is facing backwards because it calculates your course from one coordinate position to the next – and coordinates are the same regardless of which direction you are facing.
I don’t know why reversing the transducer would degrade any of the sonar, unless you are rowing so fast that you are getting air bubbles across the transducer.
