Updating HB Heads
« on: September 13, 2011, 07:30:04 AM »
When updating your HB head unit i Believe if you follow these steps you will be successful every time.
1. Unplug everything from head unit
2. Put new update on formatted Sand Disk SD card  ( I use 2 gig card)
3. Get AC power supply or AC DC adapter with fused line.( You will need a power supply connection for HB head unit)
4. Turn head on remove all SD cards
5. GO to setup Restore Defaults
6. Put card in with new update (answer yes to first question and no to second question)
7. Allow unit to update
8. When unit says updated successfully( Go to setup and Restore Defaults again)
9. Take update card out reinstall unit and wiring connections and you are finished.

This is not the only way to update your unit. But this procedure has worked many many times for me. I know how special these units are to you and we want them updated and working properly. Hope this helps Ya. Gary

Gary,
This is very good information, but the only problem with updating this way, is that you are removing and re-installing very danty connections multiple times.
Eventually one of the pins is going to get bent, worn, or broken.
In my opinion, once the head unit is situated, and the wires are
hooked up, I'd remove them only if absolutely necessary.
I've performed all my updates with the unit's wires
hooked up, and so far (knock on wood), all the updates fully
installed.

Now, were the updates themselves without problems?
No, but that's another story. ;)

Well in a perfect world not unhooking your unit is fine but i use my equipment and where i go you better
remove it because the unit will be beat to death or hire a full time security guard because it will be gone. As far as updating you can do that anytime very view times you will update. I prefer my method when possible. Updating on my PC work platform for a number of reasons. Thanks Gary

Yea,
I see your point with your security issues.

As far as updates go, I bought my 1197 in December of 2008.
Since then, I've done 8 updates, and the factory has done 1.
So, the updates average about 3 per year.

I unhook my 997 every time I get home from the lake. I have never had a problem with it yet.
