999ci antena question
« on: February 13, 2014, 08:15:57 AM »
I bought and am mounting my 999 with the internal antenna on my boat with a bow mounted transducer. I realize the inaccuracy this can cause. I also have a 50 channel hs  puck. I see that there is a port for attaching this to the 999. What effect will this have, does one negate the other, which is better? Thanks for any info.

Plugging an external GPS antenna into the rear port will automatically over-ride the internal GPS antenna...

The AS GPS HS antenna has added benefit... because the magnetic "Heading Sensor" will allow the boat icon on any chart view to show actually orientation in relation to magnetic north...even with the boat stationary...

Here is my write-up on the AS GPS HS antenna...

Great, the 999 will be mounted next to my previous 788. Will the AS YC connector simply connect to both units off the single feed from the puck antenna?

No, the AS-YC cable is for connecting an external GPS Receiver and another accessory to the unit at the same time.  If you only have the AS-GPS-HS GPS Receiver to connect to the 999 unit you do not need the AS-YC cable.

If the 788 is a chartplotter unit..

And if you want 2 head units to share one GPS puck...then you need the AS SYSLINK cable...
http://store.humminbird.com/products/323025/AS_SYSLINK

But before you order the AS SYSLINK...let Greg come back in and verify if there is a software update that would allow the 788 to operate the AS GPS HS antenna ..(because I'm not sure)...

Or you can call HB 1-800-633-1468

Yes, that is exactly what I have, an older 788c combo. It requires the external GPS receiver, and I would also like to hook up my new 999hd si to the receiver for it's added benefits. Thank you.

Be sure and talk to Greg or call HB to see if there is software version for your 788 unit that will operate the AS GPS HS antenna...

It takes a version 6.570 or higher or the 788 unit will not recognise the AS GPS HS antenna...

There's no need for the AS SYSLINK cable if your 788c Combo does not have software available that will operate the AS GPS HS antenna..

You will still be able to use the AS GPS HS antenna on the 999 regardless...

My boat, bought used came with the 788c combo working with the as gr50 GPS receiver which does not have heading sensor. Will this unit still enhance my 999? I am mounting the transducer on a dedicated deployment arm on the bow so that there won't be the directional changes normally seen with most trolling motor installs. Also this will negate one possible source of interference .  Thank you for your input. Dave.

Unfortunately your 788c Combo is not Ethernet compatible so it would have to be used as a stand alone unit....(it would have to be a 788c HD Combo to be new enough for Ethernet)...

The 788 will be a fine unit for depth and mapping...(still to be determined if there is software for the AS GPS HS antenna to be added as an additional benefit)...

Whether that fits into your planned setup would be the question...

Thank you, I now have a revised, but much more accurate plan. I plan on purchasing an AS GPS HS and mount it to the mast that my 999s transducer is mounted on the bow.  I am moving the AS G50 to the rear of the boat close to the 788s transducer. This will give me the most accuracy on both units depending on which one I use to mark a spot. I plan on upgrading from I-pilot to link in near future and the link on the terrova will be talking to the 999, and will be only a foot away from the transducer / GPS receiver. I fish mostly flowages and rivers where sweet spots are critical.

Sounds like a good plan Dave.

For the 788ci Combo unit you have; no it cannot work with the AS-GPS-HS GPS Receiver as the last software update for it was the 6.300 update.
