Best Finder for the Front of my boat
« on: April 15, 2017, 10:57:08 AM »
I have a Helix 7 SI CHIRP Sonar GPS G2 on the cockpit of my bass boat. I love all the functionality but when I fish from the front of the the boat I can look at my finder. I am planning to put a second unit at the front but I don't know which tech (SI, DI, Sonar, GPS) would be the best to have at the front of the boat. I would love 360 Imaging but can't afford it. Should I put the Helix 7 SI at the front and just get a Helix 7 GPS Sonar for cockpit?

Which setups do you use?

I really like having a SI unit at the console for scanning .... wouldn't change that.  If you can fit it into you budget a little larger unit at the bow would be helpful since you will be further away from it than at the console.  The G2 9, 10, and 12 SI unit will have a better transducer than the 7 also.

A lot of people want SI at console and bow ... depends on how you fish and what you fish for.  A larger 2D or 2D/DI unit would be more economical if you aren't interested in SI up front.

Thank you for you input Bob B.  I'm definitely going to put an SI in front. What is your recommendation about transducer placement? Back or trolling motor?

I'd mount it on the trolling motor.  I have mine on a transducer shield and saver mount.

Since the helix models don't include a trolling motor ready transducer, do you think I could get away with running a sonar gps model on a si sonar and gps transducer and just buy a new transducer for my helix 7?

The sonar GPS model can't use a SI transducer....You can exchange the transducer that comes with a unit for the trolling motor mount if you do it before you open the package for the mounting hardware and don't untie the transducer cable.

If there is ever a thought that 360 may be in your future  ...

You would the G2N models in the HELIX line that are compatible with 360  ...

360 is an Ethernet accessory  ...

For what its worth I have a 899 at the console and just put a Helix 9G2N. Mounted my transducer to a fixture that I bought from Podunk. It works great, when I had my 899 up front I had the Hd transducer mounted to it. I like the set up I have as it puts it out in front further. I think its called the SS DUCER fixture. This much I know I see them before they see the boat.
