Left Side Scan Issue...
« on: October 26, 2015, 10:54:55 AM »
I just got the Helix 7 and the left side does not show up as well as the right.
I have a 20 foot pontoon boat. Would the left pontoon cause decreased sensitivity?
The engine is not blocking the transducer and I wouldn't think the left pontoon would interfere with it.
The transducer is level. The transducer is on the right pontoon. There's a water pump for the livewells on the
left pontoon. The transducer is lower than the water pump pick up housing.

It looks to be turbulent water air bubbles coming from a pontoon or something on the back of the boat if you look at your pics the last one looks good you were @ 3 mph when you took that pic.when your going faster bubbles are blocking the si sonar pulse on the left side. Try to keep your boat speed @3 mph as well as your chart speed.see if that helps

Speed is the issue for me.  At 5mph I get a poor SideImage.  At 3.8mph it is perfect.  I know its turbulence from my hull.  My transducer is positioned in the optimal location for my boat.  The only other solution would be to mount the big transducer on a pole and lower it below the level of the hull but I'd forget to raise it and probably drag it off.

Because of the beam form shape of the SI pulse ...the left pontoon is most likely blocking some of the pulse ...

Pontoons benefit from a dual SI xducer setup with the AS SILR Y cable ...

You can always put a si transducer on the left pontoon and the right pontoon using a AS-SILR-Y cable than you will not have a problem. This is what I did and it works great.

Thanks all for the help. I slowed down to 3mph and it looks good.
