Will an XI 9 20 ice ducer work with a Piranhamax 175
« on: September 26, 2014, 03:43:26 PM »
I recently acquired an icehouse from an old friend, and am getting it ready for the upcoming winter ice fishing season here in Montana. Last year I bought a new boat, and it had the Piranhamax 175 included in the package, but was changed out for a 999ci HD SI and a 859ci HD Di shortly after. Rather than have the 175 sit unused in my shop, I thought I might be able to connect an XI 9 20 ice ducer to it and use it in the ice house this winter. Does anyone know if this combination would work?

The Piranhamax 175 transmits 200kHz/455kHz...

The XI 9 20 T is designed for 200kHz/83kHz...

I would think if the Piranhamax could be set to 200kHz only ... It may operate at this 1 frequency...

Greg will be back Monday probably for definate confirmation ...

Thanks for the replies! The 175 is selectable to 200 khz only, so thought that there might be a chance that I might be able to use the 200 khz beam on the ice ducer. I have seen ice fishing conversions done using the original 455-200 kHz transducer, but thought the ice ducer might just be an easier way to convert it.

On Fishfinder 597ci HD DI also offers the option of only 200kHz . However, this is not enough.

The 200kHz should work but I’m not sure how differently it will work.  That’s a different piezo element inside of it as compared to the XI-9-20-T transducer so everything may appear stronger or weaker.  Haven’t tried this myself or heard of anyone else who has so I don’t have any feedback for you on this.

The DI model units are a different animal altogether.

Thanks Greg, I think with the low cost of the ice ducer, it is worth the risk of trying it. I will post the results when the water gets hard, and I have a chance to test it.
If it fails.... The 175 stays on the bench, and it gives me an excuse to find a new Humminbird that is compatible with it for the ice house. Sounds like a win-win situation to me!  ;D
