Need expert help with 1198!
« on: August 03, 2014, 10:01:39 PM »
This is my first post on here and hopefully I am in the right place. I have tried a few other forums with no luck and was led here. First I will tell you my set up. I have a 998 on the dash that has the hdsi transducer and high speed 2d on the transom. This unit is on my third year and has worked flawlessly.  This year I installed a 1198 on the bow and that is using the us2 on my terrova and the two birds are networked together. I have had nothing with issues with the 1198. The first problem is that on occasion some menu options dissapear.  It is usually under the sonar tab, about half of my options dissapear and the same has happened with options under the setup tab. I only had around 11.2 volts and others thought that could make it do wierd things, as I know that was too low. So I know have it at 12.1 and up which made it do it about 75% less and can be fixed with a factory defaults reset, which didnt affect it before. So I can live with that now.The newest thing is that it wont always read that it is connected through the 998 and will not let me view the down and side imaging.  The wierd thing with these two problems is that neither of them happen all of the time. Second problem was trolling motor interference.  Humminbird cs sent a ferrite ring that cleared up most of that. Third is the very annoying problem of the double echo. 8' and less I get a double echo 90% of the time and  and I have tried about all settings, unplugged ethernet and shut off the 998 in case of interference with no avail. I have called humminbird cs 3 times and they say it is not the unit but settings. I am starting to think it might have issues. Also I am running 7.090 so I am up to date. Any advise would be great, I will try anything.  Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance.

Is this the right area to put this post? Like I said I am new to this site and maybe there is a better topic I should have it under.

This is a good place to post this question. As involved as it is, I'm guessing that it's going to take HB Greg or someone at that skill level to help you.
I believe Greg is on vacation this week, so just hang in there. I would also try HB customer support. Your 1198 should qualify you for the Select
support team. You should have got their number when you registered the 1198.

I would 1st disconnect the 1198 from the Ethernet network and disconnect the US2...leaving the 1198 running only on its own dedicated HDSI xducer....

If the issues with the 1198 are still present...we have a path forward with just the unit/xducer troubleshooting..

If the issues with the 1198 disappear...we have a path forward with Ethernet/US2 possibilities...

smokinbob,
So, are you up to date on the software of both units, and also your Ethernet software?

A weak battery and/or interference can make the units act weird.
Trolling motor interference is widely known as a major culprit.

If you're not doing so, I would suggest a separate battery for each sonar unit.
Only have one sonar hooked to each battery.  No other electrical devices to these batteries.  They can be small batteries.
Load test any existing batteries.  Voltage alone doesn't mean anything.  The battery must be able to maintain at least 10.5 volts under a load.

Also, try and run all sonar wires away from any other electrical devices.
If wires absolutely must touch each other, make them go in right angles, like a cross, where the current from two different wires can't flow in the same direction.

Itgeek, I am up to date on the software, but am not aware of a "seperate" ethernet update? Care to explain a bit more?

I don't use ethernet, so I'm not sure if there is a software update for it or not.
Just saying, if there is, then it's best to use the newest.

There's no special software for Ethernet. It's built into the standard software for each unit.
There is however a special manual devoted just to Ethernet.
A search for Ethernet Networking Guide on the Bird website will come up with it.

I kind of have my doubts that it has much to do with ethernet as I have unhooked it and it doesnt change anything, but I am no expert and wont count anything out. I thought about sending it in as I have about 6 months left of warranty,  but I have some hesitation since it doesnt do it all the time.

I have tried while it was giving me the double echo already. This weekend i am going to leave it on clear and then go from deep to shallow water and see if that does anything.

One more thing is that I was getting really bad interfernce, the ferrite ring cleared it up on the si and di for the most part but not on the 2d. That almost seems to have gotten worse which is kind of strange. Also that seems to be constant, not just when the trolling motor is on, and only on the 1198,  the 998 is clear as can be.  I am about at my wits end with this setup.

Have you tried running the 1198 as a standalone unit..with no Ethernet connection or US2 connection...??

Tracking down interference is a process of elimination and testing the unit in its own basic stock setup is the 1st step...

This will indicate if the issue is in the 1198 head unit/XHS 9 HDSI 180 T ...

No I have not, I dont know whybi didnt think of this. I believe I should be able to use all the wires that the 998 uses ( gps, and transducers) correct? They just have a different pattern to go in but all the same connections and cables. I should just flip flop them after I try the 1198 alone to see if the 998 has the same issues at the bown

That test would help out a lot smokinbobf4.  That way it would eliminate or point to the US2 transducer as the culprit.
If the 1198 is still having problems with a second echo when in shallow water try turning on and up the Noise Filter and/or adjusting the Surface Clutter menu.

I will try switching the units hopefully this weekend. And with the double echo I have tried the noise filters and surface clutter and it did not help. Thanks for all the help so far. Hopefully I can get it narrowed down.

Sorry it has been so long but between work, kids, and trying to fish I have an update. I switched my 1198 to a friends boat with a 1199 and everything worked fine. No double echo or interference.  What we were thinking was that maybe the us2 has an issue? Not sure. What are your thoughts?

Your 1198 working correctly on your friend's boat eliminates your 1198 head unit as the issue...

Now we need to determine where in your boat the issue lies...

Question when the 1198 is on your boat...

You mentioned the 1198 was connected to the Terrova...

Is the US2 the only xducer connected directly to the 1198...??

Or is there a AS SIDB Y cable connected to the 1198 and the US2 ...??

It sounds like there are 2 issues going on here...

1. The US2 hooked to the 1198 is having intermittent issues...(this would make the sonar views disappear)...

2. The Ethernet cable (or it connections)...is having intermittent issues...(this would make the 1198 not read the rear xducer occassionally)...

1st disconnect the Ethernet so that each station can be troubleshooted (is that a word?)...by itself...

Then test the 998 on the US2 ...this will help determine if the US2 is having problems...if the US2 is having problems...you may have to mount an external xducer to the foot of the TM...

2nd...test the 1198 on the transom HDSI xducer....if things are working correctly with this setup as a standalone unit...you may have a bad Ethernet cable...

Actually yes, I made it out last night and tried switching the units and the units only act up when they are at the bow. I have interference andvthe double echo, though for some reason the double echo isnt as bad as it was. Thinking maybe the us2 transducer?

The guys who have been helping you on this site know a lot more than I do but here is how I solved a similar problem.  Is your bow unit running off the same battery(s) as your trolling motor?  When I installed a front unit on my boat I conveniently powered the fish finder off the trolling motor battery and got a lot of interference.  I tried everything to eliminate it to no avail.  Finally I disconnected the unit from the tm battery and connected it to a separate small 12v  battery and the interference went away.
Good luck

I have the tm on its own set of batteries,  and the two units on to the batteries that run the main motor.

It is sounding like it could be the US2 transducer smokinbobf4.
Does this happen even when the trolling motor is not running?  If so, than that rules out trolling motor interference which could be caused by a problem with the US2 transducer anyways.

I dont know what happened, i responded to your post a few days ago but it i just noticed it didnt go through. But greg, it still does the double echo and depth reading when the terrova is off as well as the interference on the 2d screen. The interference is not terrible, but would like it cleaned up alittle if possible. If it is the transducer would a persin be better off mounting an external transducer to the tm or replacing the us2? I am almost thinking that an external might be a better transducer.

Whether it is better or not is more of a personal preference smokinbobf4.  Some like having the internal wiring of the US2.

I also like the internal wiring,  but i also dont like these issues. So today i made it out fishing  for a few hours after work and was jigging for walleye in 25-30 ft with a 3" jigging rap and could see everything perfectly. The fish on the bottom, my lure move up and down. But the interference is so high. I tried messing with everything,  just couldn't clean it up. My question is,  if it reads that good, can it still be a bad transducer? It doesnt make sense to me. My happt medium is surface clutter 2, sensitvity 3-4, and the noise filter on medium. It picks up my jig and fish alot better with the filter off or low and the others up, but its so hard to see through the interference.

Yes, it still could be the transducer smokinbobf4.
Just make sure that all of the transducer connections are fully plugged in and tightened.  Check inside the head unit to see if the fuse there is blown or not (use a multi-meter or test light to check the fuse, don’t just look at it), not all motors have one.

I actually have already checked all connections and the fuse. It was blown, but when i changed it it didnt make any difference. And also i did check it with a test light when i replaced it and it was working. What is that fuse for?

From the Trolling Motor Interference FAQ on the Humminbird web iste:

"All 2013 and newer Minn Kota 24 & 36 volt freshwater trolling motors will include a factory installed fused ground wire.   Note: If this fuse is blown, a circuit loop is being completed through the ground wire. This indicates that an improper power connection is being made to either the motor or depth finder. This improper connection must be located and corrected to prevent a circuit loop and further interference issues."
http://www.humminbird.com/Category/Support/FAQ/Trolling-Motor-Interference/

Sounds like something is not connected correctly somewhere.
