I'm far from an expert but will offer what I know!
What settings are you using now? Chart speed, SI sen. & contrast, DI sen. & contrast & 2D settings? What version are you running?

SK is right about knowing what you are using now to see where to start.  I have found that a good thing to do is make a recording of the area you are wanting to fish.  Pull off and stop and play the recording, when you see structure push the down arrow key to stop the recording.  You can then go through and adjust the Sen. / Contrast ect to try and get a better image.  Don't forget to try other pallets to see if one of those help to get a better image as well.  This way you can fine tune the unit to use in that area to find structure and fish.

1199 with the most recent software 7.020.  Sonar is 200/83.  SI is 455 with the most recent software.  I had a suggestion to try the sonar on just 200 to help with the pixellation on the sonar, which did not seem to help.  I have tried different palates and adjusting the enhancements on side imaging.  Chart speed is matched to boat speed.  I don't understand why the returns on fish looks like blobs and not the classic arch shape.  Haven't tried the recording but have rescanned lots of areas and played with the adjustment features.

I'm surprised that 200 did not give you better detail.  I use 200/83 due to wanting to see what's around the boat as well as under it.  The 83 beam gives the darker images of the two.  I have also seen that a slower boat speed can give more of a blob but retuns seen at 4 mph has done the same at times.

o with high scroll you can see the fish just moving into the beam and going back out above 10 fow.

All else fails hook up and try your unit on another users setup and the same with his unit on your xducer.

Have you tried to view and adjust your shot in HumViewer?  I know this will not help on the water with the unit but may tell you if it's a settings / unit issue or a tx issue.   This shot did not give this detail until it was viewed there and settings adjusted.  just a thought

kybass13,
The “classic arch shape” is a by-product of the correct unit menu settings combined with the correct boat speed and cooperative fish.  You should take Screen Snapshot of the  full screen 2D sonar for us to look at and offer suggestions for.  We would need to know the boat speed and menu settings that you are using.

Thanks Greg, will do.
Does the image look different from the full screen to the smaller one in the images I posted?  Boat speed was matched to unit speed at 4.

It will in that the image itself will be larger.  This will really help in the vertical pixel department as this helps to show the arch form easier.

kybass13,
Your Si images look very good to me and contain some interesting detail.

The fish would have looked better in the last (2D sonar) image if you would have been either using a faster Chart Speed or a slower boat speed.  That would have made the sonar returns from the fish longer (left to right).  Using a smaller vertical range on the display (setting the Lower range menu to 20 feet) would also have helped as more vertical pixels would have been used for a smaller area.  These two changes would make it more likely that the fish would have been shown with an arch shape.
Did you have the Beam Select menu set to the 200/83kHz setting?

I've tried both with the sonar.  The 200 alone and the 200/83.  Adjusting the sensitivity I can get them to look pretty close to the image I saved.  I have tried keeping the boat speed at idle and adjusting the chart speed, but I didn't notice really any improvement.  Instead of blobs it looked like longer sticks.  Thanks for the reply and any other suggestions would be appreciated.

I am in the same boat...I need advice on how to get clearer images. Below are a few snapshots from my latest excursion. I know I am not using my 999 to its fullest capabilities because I do not know how to fine tune it. However my fishing buddy did catch a nice 22" 4.3 lb largemouth.

Not sure what I am seeing in the snapshots or what I should do to adjust.

You are not going to get good side imaging screenshots at that low a boat speed.  Both SI and DI need more movement of the boat to "paint" a good image.
Try going 3-5 MPH and match the scroll rate to boat speed.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

Rh, like Bob said on boat/scroll speed will help things a lot. When you have this set, run the area you want to check out while making a recording.

When done stop the recording and play it back.  I like to use only one screen at a time when fine tuning.   Sharpness off to start with.  Work with Sen. First and lower till you see a bad screen then come up till you see good detail... Then go up one or two more,  notice it starts to get to hot.   Then come back down to it looks good again.   Now work with Contrast same thing.   You will start to see a much better image.   Different areas may need diff. settings due to many variable.  This is why I tune it for different location.

This can be done for 2d and DI as well.

You may need to go back and forth several times with the Sen. and Contrast to get what you are looking for.  After you have it set you can then make your passes in that area with a screen that is much better than you started with.   Hope it helps
