poor 997 imageing
« on: September 16, 2013, 04:57:34 PM »
I have 2 used 997's  and the imaging is just horrendous at low speeds  at any thing below 1 plus mph  everything is blurred and it is hard if not impossible to pick out detail. I use them on the bow and have tried them on 2 diff t/d's same results. I can look at my 798 running at the same time and the pic is way way better, any thoughts?

Is the transducer mounted on the trolling motor? If yes, is the trolling motor pointing forward while scanning?

For a speed of 0.3 and 0.8 mph that may be as good as it gets.  I'm not 100% sure on this as it has been a very long time since I have tried any Si imaging at these speeds.  I do know that you will have to keep a very straight track and constant speed at these slower speeds to get any sort of clear image.

when your on the t/m these are the speeds you get. My 798 resolution  at these speeds is light yrs ahead of the 997

You mentioned 2 - 997's....

Are both 997 units using their own xducer...and both have this same problem...??

Have you tried either of the 997's on the 798 xducer...??

I tend to get better readings at 2-3mph at chart speed 1 at 455khz. I can't seem to get my 800khz scans to be as clear so I gave up on that freq.

yes but thats not the speed you scan at on a t/m
Rn I only run a 997 at the bow and my 798 on the console  and when I am on the t/m I spin the 798 around  to compare images at sub 1mph

I've never been able to get very good scans going that slow. I always end up turning or something messing up the sidecan.

I am talking about the part when you are traveling in a fairly straight line and the 997 can't pick out detail unless something is very close to being under the boat then it can pick out some fair detail

I wonder if your transducer for the 997 has deteriorated. Can you swap the 798 and 997 and see if the problem is the transducer.

How about leaving the trolling motor in the water with the 997 on and using the outboard to maybe go 2-3mph and see if the scans look any better.

I've always read that it's best to have SI on the Trans & DI on the TM! Works good that way for me.
