998 SI problem
« on: April 09, 2013, 04:37:32 AM »
Setup 798ci hd si combo on bow, 998 SI on console.

Took the boat out and 998 SI is not working, 2d and DI appear to work but on SI solid color on both sides.  "Water column" gets wider and narrower as depth changes but, nothing on the sides.  Hooked the 798 up to the back ducer and same result.

The back transducer is mounted with a "Transducer Shield and Saver" mount.

I noticed today that the ducer has about 1/4" (measured at the back) of up down/play.  Is this normal?  Could it cause issues?  I never noticed it before.

How does the mount location look?

Regarding the wobble in the transducer mount - yes, mine has about a 1/4" movement also.  It appears to be normal, since the transducer sits between two metal ears that are designed to keep the transducer from kicking up.  There is a little gap between the transducer and the indent on the ears that allows the transducer to move.

Can you post some screenshots of what you are seeing (or not seeing) in the display images...??

That movement is normal.
I don’t see anything on your transom (besides the motor) that could be blocking enough of the Si sonar beams to be causing a lot of problems.  Certainly there is nothing to the right side that will.  If the 798 and 998 units show better detail on the 798’s transducer, than I would guess that the problem is with the 998’s transducer.

Thanks for the help.  I talked to HB today and they are shipping a new transducer in the AM.  I'll let ya all know what happens with the new one.
Thanks again!

Is HB charging you for the Transducer, or is it covered under warranty?

The transducer was covered but, I don't think that was the proble.  I'll try and post pictures from this weekend.
New transducer same results.  Snapshot taken right after the transducer passed the objects.  Unit was reset to factory defaults.  Both items show on the bow 798 but, the screenshot didn't work for some reason.
1st is a LARGE concrete outflow.  2nd is a 8'X8" concrete something.  3rd is a shot from the surface the outflow is near and the other concrete can be seen in the distance.
I'll call HB back in the morning but, any ideas?

hi, what are those outlets/intakes(holes)at the bottom of the v shape in front of your engine? could you possibly mount the transducer besides those. then you would eliminate turbulense from the v shape.

Try that again but this time connect your 798 unit to the 998’s transducer and see if it will show these same objects or not.  That will quickly point to or eliminate the transducer mounting.

Also, can you take a screen snapshot with the SI Range set to 20 feet and post it please?  Using a different SI Color would also help.

Thanks for the input.  I'm going to try and get out next weekend and try your ideas.
Also had a guy from another forum suggest slowing down.  He thinks with the mounting at that speed I may be getting air bubbles trashing the image.
Thanks again!

That’s why I wanted a screen snapshot with the Si Range at 20 feet and using a different Si Color setting; so we could see if this was a part of the problem or not.   ;)

yes and from your di it looks like you have air bubbles/ turbulence.  but that could be a thermocline og current from the outflow.  :)

Ok after a month of cold, rain, lake closed for high water.  I got out today.
When I idle the screen is a LOT clearer, Not sure why the water discharge is still so blurry.
Thanks for the inputs, I guess the speed is the key.
I've got one more screen shot I'll post in another thread and see if somebody can translate.
