Is it possible to save screen shots to a personal SD card while using the navionics maps?  The unit has only one card slot.  Do the navionics maps unload when the map card is removed?  Is it safe to remove the map card when the unit is turned on?

A rule of thumb regarding remote storage is that while reading or writing to a memory card though shalt not remove. During the rest of the time it is good.

Rule number one of map cards.
Thou shall turn off the unit before removing the map card!!!!!!!!
Or bad things can happend to the map card or unit. $$$$$$

I would assume that on a unit with a single SD card slot, that
you would first insert your map card and let it load into memory.
Do this right after the machine boots up.

Then remove it.
Then insert your SD card.
You can then save screenshots, or export your NAV data (waypoints, tracks, routes).
to the SD card.

Anytime you reboot, you will have to re-load your maps (insert map card, then remove).
I think once the 'loading maps' message disappears, it is safe to remove the
map card.  The map card is read-only anyway, so I don't think you could damage it
by inserting/removing it if the machine is on or off.

This sounds logical, but Humminbird's Greg would know for sure.
I hope he chimes in to verify.

Does the unit load the entire map or does it page as you move around?
What a memory eater upper if it loads all of it at one time.

Hopefully it's not the case that you would lose the maps when inserting a data card to record screenshots.  Otherwise, I would think the unit would come with two slots.  Hopefully someone from HB will say.

I think on a unit with a single SD slot, it would have to load
all of the maps at once.
Otherwise, it couldn't page down unless it displayed a
message to re-insert the map card everytime it needed to
page.

I can't see it working that way.

I think the mapping will only work while the map card is inserted in the unit.....otherwise, you could use the same map card for multiple units and they aren't going to let that happen

This is one of the weaknesses of a unit with a single card slot.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

Most sonar, gps units page map data from the card. Without the card there is no map data other than default..

The units do not upload the map card data.  The only load the map hex for the area you are in (or have the cursor pointed to).  If you remove the map card, the map will go away.

I have always been told that you should not uninstall any memory device while it is being used.  Having said that; I have removed and installed map cards for many years without having one fail – but I have also done the same with MMC, SD and SDHC memory cards and have fragged more than ten of them during the same time period…  Play it safe and shut the unit down when installing and removing the map card.

The 597ci HD DI units have only one map card slot.  So you cannot use a map card and make screen snapshots at the same time.  The 500 series units do not have all of the bells, whistles and functions that the more expensive 700 series and higher units do.

This is a great discussion regarding hot plugging. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_swapping.
While getting to know this unit it seems that there is a shutdown sequence that assures removable media will not be harmed once off. Otherwise there is no safely to remove menu option.
In the past floppy drives had to have the R/W head off the disk before shutting down.
Pulses during a shutdown could ruin media. We have came a long way from that era.

Guess no screen shots for me then.  Bummer.  Six hundred dollars does not seem like a cheap unit to me.   Can I pull the navionics card while operating and place a writable card in or not?   Killing the power would lose the waypoint info, right?
