No sonar detected
« on: July 02, 2012, 09:37:35 PM »
Hey everyone,

Hope you can help. I have just purchased a brand new 898c. Sometimes when i boot up the unit. The sonar does not register and all that i'm left with is the gps portion working only. I turn it off leave it for a couple of mins turn it on and it reads the sonar. Sometimes turning it on and off doesn't work at all. So I select restore defaults and the sonar works. This problem has happened ever since i took the unit out of the box. I just recently updated my unit to 6.180 ... still same symptoms. Do I have a defective unit? or someone knows a fix or an option i need to enable?

It could be the unit or it could be the transducer(s).

What transducer(s) do you have connected to the unit, how are they connected and where are they mounted?

Any chance that you can find someone else with a Humminbird unit that would let you test your unit on their boat?  This does not have to be another 898c Si unit as almost all of the models we have made will work to test the sonar – just don’t use any of the units that have “3D” or “DI” in their model name.  If you still have the 798 unit that is listed in your profile; that transducer will work for this test.  All you are trying to do here is see if the same thing happens (which means that the problem is in the unit) or not (which means the problem is in your transducer(s).  Be sure and reset the menus back to the factory defaults before testing this.

Hi Greg,

Thank you very much for the quick reply. The transducer I have is the stock 898 that come with the box. I will try my 798 Head and go from there.

Cheers
