Switching HB Units Between Different Boats
« on: February 20, 2012, 09:19:49 PM »
Hey guys.  I've got several questions that pertain to moving units around between boats.  I currently have a bass boat with a 997C on a Ram mount at the driving position on the boat, and a Lowrance X135(which I plan on keeping) up on the trolling motor.  I also have an 1860 aluminum duck boat that I use for bowfishing that came with a 797C2 at the driving position.  What I would like to do is have a ram mount for the 797C2 that I could move from the front of each boat depending on which one I was using.  I would also like to install a station for the 997C on the duck boat so that I could use it in that boat as well.  Both boats have the transducers on the back.  Right now I would only need the 797C2 to utilize the GPS function on the front of both boats.  I would also like to share waypoints between both units.  So what all would I need to buy?  What would it take to move the 797C2 from the back of the duck boat to the front(I would like a new mount for it b/c the current one is kinda sloppy from being in a flat bottom boat in choppy water).  There is no trolling motor on that boat, so what would it take if I did desire it to show depth at a later time on the front unit?  Do they make extensions for the transducer, gps, and power cables or can the 797C2 get all those readings from the 997C if they were interlinked?  Finally, how much do you think I would have involved in this?  I'm guessing I would need a new mount and ram mount for the 797C2, a new transducer for the 997C, as well as a connection kit with power wire for the 997C.  Can the 997C use the GPS puck that the 797C2 is using now, or are there different kinds?  I will also need all the installation supplies for the 797C2 in the bass boat minus the transducer.  I know this is long and confusing, but I think its going to be awesome to move both units back and forth between the boats!

Folks do this all the time.  All that is really needed is an extra transducer dedicated to each boat unless you make all of this portable.

Sharing waypoints can be done with several external programs. I will let the guys who do this post their particular option..

So I will have to get a 997C transducer for the duck boat.  Will the Gps puck for the 797 that's already in the duck boat work for the 997 or will I have to get one of those too?  Do they sell a second station for the 997?  Basically a kit of everything that came with the unit except the actual unit itself?

Also, does each unit have to have its own GPS puck, or can both units share one in the same boat?

they will each have to have their own puck unless you use only one unit at a time..That also implies that the common puck is supported by each unit..

This is going to be a long reply…

Let me get this clear; you now have:
1.) Bass Boat – 997c Si unit mounted on the console with the transducer mounted on the transom and an external GPS Receiver.
2.) Alum Duck Boat – 797c2 unit at the console with the transducer mounted on the transom and an external GPS Receiver.
Right?

You will be moving the 797c2 unit to the bow of the Alum Duck Boat but do not at this time need it for sonar – just GPS.  You want to be able to move both units back and forth between boats (the 797c2 being used only for GPS on both boats at this time).  So you need the following:

For the 797c2 unit:
 - 2 each of the MS-M Unit Mounts (the way the unit mounts and the way the cables mount for this unit make the use of a RAM mount moot).  One to replace the worn out one you now have on the Alum Duck Boat (which will get mounted at the bow) and the other for the Bass Boat.
 - 1 PC-10 Power Cable (you already have one now)

For the 997c Si unit:
 - 1 RAM Mount + one extra base so that you can move the unit from boat to boat without having to buy a second unit mounting bracket for this unit.  I don’t know model numbers here so look on the RAM web site for these.
 - 1 of the 900 Series Connector Collectors (part #540165-2).  This is the parts that hold the cables to the unit.
 - 1 PC-11 Power Cable

 - 2 AS-InterLink module accessories (one for each boat).  These will allow the sharing of the GPS Receivers you already have on each boat and will allow the units to share GPS Waypoints as well.  They come with the connection cables you need to connect them to both units on both boats.

This is all assuming that you use the existing transducers on the boats and existing GPS Receivers.

The 997c Si unit can use the transducer from the 797c2 unit but it will not have 800kHz capabilities and the 455kHz sonar will not be as defined.

The 997 can also use the 797c2 unit’s GPS Receiver and assuming that you have the same GR16 GPS Receiver for your 997 unit: the 797c2 can use it as well.  NOTE: if you instead have the GR50 GPS Receiver for the 997c Si unit; the 797c2 cannot use it without risking internal circuitry damage.

However, some improvements to the systems on each boat could be made and of course these will cost more money:
 - XHS-9-HDSi-180-T transducer for the 997c Si unit for use on the Alum Duck Boat.
 - 2 GR50 GPS Receivers for use with the 997c Si unit on each boat.  The 997c Si unit can use the more accurate GR50 GPS Receiver (the 797c2 may be damaged if it does) and connecting a GPS Receiver to each unit would allow for more accurate waypoints as well as a faster GPS refresh rate.
 - 2 XTM-9-Si-180-T trolling motor mounted Si transducers for the 797c2 unit on each boat.

There are no second station kits for the Si units.
