chart speed on new 798ci si
« on: January 07, 2012, 06:25:15 AM »
Just hooked up my new 798ci si unit on the bow.  Made sure both the 798c si at the console and the new unit had the 5.450 S/W version.  Installed on interlinked system according to the recommended method per Gregg.  All went fine but... the unit on the bow, whether it be the new unit, or the older one has a really slow chart speed which cannot be adjusted?  At first I wondered if I was in simulation mode, but that's not the case and either unit will act fine at the console.  Power is fine (11.8v) at both.  Could there be something with the transducer at the bow causing this?  I am going to power the units up in the house w/o a ducer hooked to them and see what that produces.  Any tho'ts much appreciated.

When you first hit the menu button, the express menu comes up, on this menu should be your chart speed adjustment.  Use the arrow keys Right or Left to adjust your chart speed, rule of thumb is to match your boat speed.

Also, you may want to review Doug Vahrenberg's videos, there is a 9 part seminar on how to get the most out of your unit.  Even though he is using an 1197 for the seminar it will help out a lot in understanding your unit.

Thanks for the reply George.  I know how to adjust it, the problem is that it wont change speed even though the bar shows it calling for a faster rate.  I'm going to try a couple other troubleshooting tactics today after work, but I may have something going on with the transducer as that is the only part of the system that is diff. console to bow.  The odd thing, and what makes me think the transducer, is that either unit appears to work fine at the console.

Maybe you might want to reset your unit(s) to the default mode and reinstall an older update version, test and see what it does.  It does not make sense that both units would act that way, improbable but not impossible.  Also you may want to  try removing the interlink to determine if this is the problem.  Somehow I think it is something in your set up causing the issue.  Keep good notes on your changes, someone on this site will be able to help you.

I don't know but could the ping rate cause an issue?

I am guessing that you have tried running the chart speed at 1 mph and at the highest rate to view the difference.

OK.  Well I'm not sure what I did other than checking the settings of my new unit to the old, but believe it or not, up here in MI floating your boat on the 8th of Jan is out of the norm however... I put the boat in a lake close by and played with the units to calibrate the depths, etc. and all is fine?  Guess I must have had something set wrong?

Great, now all you have to do is wait for the lakes to clear the ice.  Also, I have spent a lot of time on my boat (on the trailer), playing with my Humminbird unit, especially when I was going through Doug Vahrenberg's 9 seminars.  If you have not watched them it is worth taking the time.

YankeeDoodler,
Were the 798ci Si units doing this while the transducer was out of the water?
If so, than the units were updating slowly because they were searching for the lake/river bottom.
